JPMorgan Says Bitcoin Could Outperform Stocks and Bonds Over 10 Years, but Still Rejects Portfolio Role

JPMorgan says Bitcoin could outperform stocks, bonds and gold over the next decade, but remains too volatile and unpredictable in its relationship with other assets to serve as a recommended diversifier in balanced portfolios.

JPMorgan’s asset-management division says Bitcoin could deliver stronger returns than stocks, bonds and gold over the next decade, but the bank is not yet prepared to recommend the cryptocurrency as a strategic holding in a balanced portfolio.

The view appears in JPMorgan’s 2027 Long-Term Capital Market Assumptions report. The report acknowledges that Bitcoin’s price volatility has eased, but says that improvement is not sufficient to establish the cryptocurrency as a reliable portfolio diversifier.

According to Bitcoin Magazine, JPMorgan describes Bitcoin as a speculative asset and a potential hedge against monetary easing. However, it says the cryptocurrency currently lacks a dependable role alongside traditional assets because its relationship with those markets has been unstable.

Why JPMorgan remains cautious

Diversification generally depends on holding assets that do not all move in the same direction at the same time. JPMorgan’s report says Bitcoin’s correlations with other asset classes have not been stable enough for that purpose. It also says Bitcoin mostly trades as a high-beta risk asset, following the growth of the global money supply.

The report includes a base-case chart in which Bitcoin’s returns exceed those of stocks, bonds and gold over a 10-year period. That projection does not amount to an endorsement for investors, however. The bank warns that Bitcoin’s volatility could continue to limit its usefulness in portfolios even if its long-term return potential is higher.

JPMorgan says its assessment could change if several conditions develop: volatility would need to keep falling, relationships with other asset classes would need to become more stable, and regulation, market liquidity and price discovery would need to improve.

A divided position inside JPMorgan

JPMorgan has used blockchain technology, the system underlying Bitcoin, to launch its own products. Its chief executive, Jamie Dimon, has nevertheless remained a prominent Bitcoin critic. Dimon has described Bitcoin as a “hyper up fraud” and a “pet rock,” and has argued that its value is mainly connected with criminal activity.

At the same time, Dimon has praised blockchain technology and supported crypto-related products such as stablecoins. The latest asset-management report therefore adds a more measured institutional assessment without changing the bank’s warning about Bitcoin’s risk and volatility.

Bitcoin has gained greater acceptance in traditional finance since the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission approved exchange-traded funds linked to the cryptocurrency in 2024. The source material also says that President Donald Trump’s pro-crypto position and a more open regulatory approach in the United States since 2025 have supported the sector’s increased presence on Wall Street.
