Kraken’s European Unified Wallet Could Expose Spot Crypto to Futures Losses

Kraken’s new opt-in Unified Wallet for eligible EEA clients combines selected spot, Earn and futures collateral. Its default cross-margin design means losses on futures positions can reach qualifying spot balances, while isolated margin offers separate exposure for eligible contracts.

Kraken’s European Unified Wallet Could Expose Spot Crypto to Futures Losses

Kraken has launched its Unified Wallet for eligible users in the European Economic Area, allowing them to use one pool of collateral across selected spot, margin, Earn and futures balances. The arrangement simplifies transfers on Kraken Pro, but it also creates a risk: once activated, losses on a futures trade can draw on qualifying spot holdings and eligible Earn balances.

How the wallet changes collateral

The feature became available to eligible EEA clients on October 16, according to CryptoSlate. It is not enabled automatically. Users must activate Unified Wallet in their Kraken Pro account settings, and futures trading must also be enabled. Once switched on, eligible balances are pooled for collateral purposes.

Under the default cross-margin setting, the exchange calculates margin across the eligible balance rather than treating the futures collateral as a separate pot. This means a losing futures position may use funds that would otherwise remain outside the futures account, including qualifying assets held for spot trading and certain Earn balances.

Kraken says more than 40 cryptocurrencies can be used as collateral, along with the US dollar, euro and gold, represented by XAU. The initial documentation values bitcoin and ether at 99% of their value for cross margin, while USD and EUR receive a 100% valuation. Kraken notes that these parameters can change.

The pool is not identical for every EEA customer. Kraken’s collateral rules assign USDT and DAI a zero collateral value in the region through a 100% haircut. Coin-M, or inverse, derivatives balances remain outside Unified Wallet, as do US TradFi futures.

Isolated margin and returning to separate wallets

Users who want to limit the collateral exposed to a particular trade can use isolated margin on linear Multi-M futures contracts. In that arrangement, the margin allocated to an individual position is separated from the wider balance, limiting the position’s potential trading losses to that allocation.

Kraken allows users to activate Unified Wallet without closing existing positions. The process is less immediate in the opposite direction. To return to separate wallets, customers must first close all derivatives positions and active orders. After the change, funds remain in the Main wallet, and users must manually transfer assets to the separate derivatives wallet before opening new positions there.
