Ledger has introduced a new $849 hardware wallet that is designed to combine cryptocurrency security with smartphone-style everyday applications, as the French company responds to a recent incident involving allegedly malicious implants in devices sold through an Asian reseller.
New device targets physical tampering
Called Atom, the device is expected to begin shipping in summer 2027, according to an announcement shared with Cointelegraph. Ledger says its design separates Android applications from the wallet’s sensitive operations, creating a division between general-purpose software and the functions used to manage crypto assets.
The company also says Atom includes safeguards intended to block the implants involved in the recent incident. Its security system is advertised as capable of detecting tampering even while the device is powered off. Ledger said the product will additionally support approvals for AI agents, encrypted messaging and post-quantum cryptography.
A hardware wallet is a physical device used to manage access to cryptocurrency by keeping sensitive wallet operations separate from an internet-connected computer or phone. Atom’s smartphone-like format is intended to extend that device beyond storage and transaction security into broader everyday use.
Incident prompts sales restrictions
The announcement came after malicious implants were found in wallets sold through CryptoBilis, an authorized reseller. Ledger confirmed the issue on Friday and asked distributors in Southeast Asia and Hong Kong to suspend sales of its products.
European retail chain MediaMarkt has also removed Ledger wallets from its shelves. The company did not state in the supplied material how many devices were affected or identify the party responsible for placing the implants.
When asked when Atom’s anti-tampering technology had been developed, a Ledger spokesperson said the work was not prompted by isolated incidents. The spokesperson did not disclose a development timeline, leaving the company’s precise schedule for creating the protections unspecified.
New reseller rules
Alongside the Atom announcement, Ledger published new requirements for authorized resellers. Stores must keep devices away from public displays and hand them directly to customers at the time of purchase. Ledger also repeated that returned devices must not be sold again.
Those measures address the handling and chain of custody of physical wallets before they reach buyers. The company’s response therefore includes both a future product with additional security features and changes to how current products are presented and distributed.
