MARA Holdings transferred about 996 bitcoin, valued at approximately $81.13 million, to an address identified as belonging to Galaxy Digital, according to blockchain data flagged by Lookonchain and reported by CoinDesk. The movement comes as the bitcoin miner reduces its cryptocurrency holdings and redirects resources toward artificial intelligence and high-performance computing infrastructure.
The transfer does not, by itself, establish that Galaxy Digital sold the bitcoin. A wallet movement can reflect a range of transactions, and the available information identifies the destination but does not confirm what happened to the coins afterward.
MARA’s bitcoin treasury has shrunk
MARA’s holdings have declined substantially this year. Historical data from Bitcoin Treasuries shows that the company held 53,822 BTC on Feb. 26. By Aug. 7, that balance had fallen to 35,577 BTC — a reduction of 18,245 bitcoin.
The decrease follows a broader change in the company’s priorities. MARA, which was previously focused solely on bitcoin mining, has expanded into AI and high-performance computing infrastructure. It has also sold part of its bitcoin treasury to strengthen its balance sheet and support that strategy.
In March, the company sold 15,133 BTC for approximately $1.1 billion. The proceeds were used primarily to fund the repurchase of convertible debt. Convertible debt is borrowing that can potentially be exchanged for shares under specified terms; buying it back can reduce a company’s obligations and alter its capital structure.
The latest transfer is therefore being watched in the context of MARA’s falling bitcoin balance and its shift away from relying exclusively on mining-related activities. However, the transaction alone is not confirmation of another sale.
Shares and bitcoin move higher in the report
MARA shares were 2% higher in premarket trading on Friday at $10, while bitcoin had recovered above $82,000 over the previous 24 hours, according to the source material.
The company’s bitcoin holdings are significant because cryptocurrency miners can retain mined bitcoin as a treasury asset or sell it to raise cash. Changes in that treasury can affect liquidity, debt reduction efforts and the resources available for other corporate initiatives. In MARA’s case, the reported transfer adds to scrutiny of how the company is balancing its digital-asset exposure with its investment in AI infrastructure.
