Mastercard launches platform linking stablecoins to banking and card payments

Mastercard is expanding its stablecoin infrastructure business with a platform designed to connect digital-currency balances to conventional banking services, card payments and money transfers. The company says the offering will allow businesses to provide stablecoin services without building the underlying technology themselves.

A bridge between stablecoins and traditional payments

Called Global Money Platform, the service enables businesses to hold and convert both fiat currencies and stablecoins. It also supports stablecoin-linked cards and allows companies to send payments from stablecoin balances directly to recipients’ local bank accounts.

Stablecoins are digital assets designed to maintain a relatively stable value, typically by referencing a fiat currency. By connecting those balances to banking and card networks, Mastercard is positioning the platform as an operational link between digital assets and established payment services.

The platform connects with Mastercard Move, the company’s money-transfer network. Mastercard says Move can route payments to more than 17 billion destinations, including bank accounts and cards. Stablecoin balances can also be connected to Mastercard’s merchant network, enabling users to spend them through payment cards.

BVNK integration and early partners

The launch is Mastercard’s first major integration with BVNK since Mastercard acquired the stablecoin infrastructure company in August, according to the company’s announcement. The arrangement brings BVNK’s capabilities into a broader Mastercard offering for businesses and financial technology companies.

Nuvei and Marqeta are among the first companies to integrate the platform, alongside several other fintech businesses. Rather than requiring each company to create its own stablecoin systems, Global Money Platform is intended to provide the infrastructure that can support services offered under those companies’ own brands.

That model broadens Mastercard’s role in digital assets. Instead of operating only as a network that processes payments, the company is also supplying tools for businesses that want to hold, convert and use stablecoins within payment products.

Competition and the stablecoin market

Mastercard’s move places it in closer competition with Visa. Visa introduced a platform in July that allows financial institutions to hold, mint and transfer stablecoins. The competing initiatives show how major card networks are seeking a role in the infrastructure used by financial companies to handle digital currencies.

The launch comes as research from Standard Chartered points to rising stablecoin transaction activity, even though the circulating supplies of major tokens such as USDt and USDC have remained relatively flat this year. The combination suggests that payment usage and infrastructure development are receiving attention even without a corresponding increase in the supply of the largest stablecoins.
