Meanwhile, a Bermuda-based life insurer that uses bitcoin for policy premiums and death benefits, has raised $37.5 million in a funding round led by existing investor Bain Capital Crypto. The company is backed by OpenAI founder and CEO Sam Altman and says it is expanding its services beyond the United States.
The latest investment brings Meanwhile’s total funding to $180 million. Other participants included Haun Ventures, Framework Ventures, Pantera Capital, Apollo and additional investors, according to an emailed announcement cited by CoinDesk.
Bitcoin-based life insurance
Meanwhile offers life insurance policies in which both the premium and the death benefit are denominated in bitcoin rather than traditional currencies. The model applies bitcoin to a conventional wealth-management product, giving policyholders a way to use the cryptocurrency in life insurance and inheritance planning, in addition to investment and trading.
The company’s BTC Life 1-Pay product, introduced earlier this year, allows a customer to make one payment in bitcoin in return for a guaranteed death benefit also denominated in bitcoin. Unlike a policy priced in dollars, the product’s stated values are tied to bitcoin units.
Meanwhile raised $82 million one year ago. The company received an insurance licence from the Bermuda Monetary Authority in 2024, providing the regulatory basis for its Bermuda operations.
Expansion through international brokers
The insurer is now building distribution outside the U.S. It has signed 15 brokers that serve high-net-worth clients in Switzerland, Singapore, Hong Kong and the United Arab Emirates.
The broker relationships are part of Meanwhile’s effort to reach wealthy customers across several international markets. The announcement did not provide details about the number of policies sold, premiums collected or the geographic breakdown of the new funding.
Using brokers can connect a specialised insurance product with clients who already work with wealth-management and financial-advisory firms. Meanwhile’s focus on bitcoin-denominated benefits also distinguishes it from life insurance policies that calculate premiums and payouts in fiat currencies.
Current market picture
Moneyiar market data at 10:59 a.m. on October 9, 2026, showed bitcoin at $82,501.42, down 0.22% over 24 hours and 4.38% over seven days.
Other listed assets were mixed:
- Cronos was at $0.060886, down 2.89% in 24 hours and 12.26% over seven days.
- Cap was at $0.072939, up 1.27% in 24 hours and 9.17% over seven days, based on data recorded at 10:58 a.m.
- ONEchain was at $0.129833, down 4.15% in 24 hours and 5.41% over seven days.
Meanwhile’s financing comes as the company seeks to make bitcoin part of insurance and succession planning. Its expansion will depend on the continued availability of licensed insurance operations and distribution partners in the markets it is targeting, while the value of bitcoin-denominated benefits remains linked to the cryptocurrency’s market price.
