Meanwhile, a Bermuda-based life insurance company that operates entirely in Bitcoin has secured $37.5 million from existing investors, taking its total funding above $180 million. The company said demand for its Bitcoin-linked life insurance policies has increased internationally as broader macroeconomic instability drives interest in regulated ways to hold and transfer digital assets.
According to Cointelegraph, Bain Capital Crypto led the latest financing round. Haun Ventures, Framework Ventures, Pantera Capital, Apollo, Northwestern Mutual Future Ventures and Morgan Creek Digital also participated. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman is among Meanwhile’s backers.
Insurance designed around Bitcoin ownership
Meanwhile’s business focuses on life insurance policies denominated and operated in Bitcoin. The company says its products are intended to help Bitcoin holders address succession and estate-planning needs, including the transfer of wealth to the next generation.
The insurer said demand has been particularly strong in Asia, Europe and the Middle East. Its co-founder and CEO, Zac Townsend, said wealthy families already hold Bitcoin but have lacked a regulated mechanism for passing those holdings on. He added that brokers had approached the company after clients began asking for such products.
The new capital is intended to help Meanwhile respond to that demand. The company did not disclose the valuation attached to the financing or provide detailed financial terms for the round.
Two products for different markets
In early 2026, Meanwhile introduced BTC Life 1-Pay, a whole-life policy requiring a single premium. The product is aimed at high-net-worth customers outside the United States.
It followed BTC 10-Pay, the company’s first product line, which is designed for US taxpayers. Meanwhile said its policies may be owned by individuals, trusts or companies, giving customers different structures for succession and estate planning.
The company also reported that net long-term underwriting income has already exceeded its total for the previous year. It said that income is on course to more than double in 2026, but did not publish precise figures.
Meanwhile’s fundraising comes as insurance providers and brokers develop other services for digital-asset risks. Cointelegraph reported in June that WTW had acquired crypto insurance platform Redefind and launched a service covering costs linked to forensic investigations, asset tracing and legal recovery after digital-asset theft or loss. Redefind said its platform verifies insured assets using cryptographic proof of ownership.
