Meta launches $95 billion capital raise to fund artificial-intelligence expansion

Meta has launched a planned $95 billion capital raise to support artificial-intelligence initiatives, while investors navigate falling oil prices, sharp losses in Brazil, major technology earnings and interest-rate decisions from three central banks.

Meta has begun a capital-raising programme worth about $95 billion as it seeks to finance an expansion of its artificial-intelligence operations, while markets prepare for a week dominated by central-bank decisions, major technology earnings and geopolitical developments.

Meta turns to markets to finance AI plans

The company said Monday that it is offering approximately $35 billion in securities. That package includes about $22.5 billion of common stock and $12.5 billion of preferred shares.

Meta also plans to raise a further $60 billion through an at-the-market offering of newly created Class C common stock. An at-the-market offering allows a company to sell shares into the market over time, rather than completing the entire sale in a single transaction.

Meta said artificial intelligence was opening “significant opportunities” across its existing businesses and newer products. The company said its AI investments were already producing measurable benefits through higher engagement, better advertising performance and greater monetization.

It also identified personal superintelligence, consumer and business agents, enterprise products and AI glasses as areas it is pursuing. Meta shares were 2% higher in pre-market trading after the announcement.

Markets face a crowded week

The fundraising announcement came as investors assessed several competing signals across global markets. Brent crude was trading just below $110 a barrel, down more than 6% from Friday’s high. The decline followed reduced fears of a further escalation after hopes for a US-Iran deal improved.

According to CoinDesk, the Financial Times reported that Iran was hosting officials from Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and Turkey after a visit by Qatari officials. The source material did not provide details of any agreement.

Brazilian equities also came under heavy pressure. Brazil’s stock market fell 20% after President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva unexpectedly secured a fourth term, while the iShares MSCI Brazil ETF dropped 26% in pre-market trading.

Elsewhere, bitcoin was holding slightly above $80,000 and gold was trading a little above $4,000 an ounce. The Invesco QQQ Trust was flat before the market opened, despite continuing concerns about technology and artificial-intelligence valuations. The US Dollar Index remained firm just below 102, while the US 10-year Treasury yield stood just below 5%.

Earnings and rate decisions in focus

Microsoft and Amazon are scheduled to report quarterly earnings this week. Their results will provide fresh information on demand and spending among some of the largest technology companies, although the source material did not give earnings estimates.

Investors are also awaiting interest-rate decisions from the Federal Reserve, the Bank of Japan and the European Central Bank. The Fed decision is due Wednesday, according to the source material, adding to the focus on interest rates and market liquidity.
