MetaMask is withdrawing from Ethereum validators operated through its staking infrastructure while it investigates a security incident affecting part of its systems. The crypto wallet provider said the move is precautionary and that it has not found an immediate threat to users’ MetaMask wallets.
According to Cointelegraph, MetaMask said it is handling the threat internally and is working with outside partners and security advisers. The company did not disclose the nature of the security issue, how it began or whether any assets had been affected. It also did not immediately respond to Cointelegraph’s request for comment.
Validator exits affect MetaMask’s staking operations
The measures apply to validators used in MetaMask’s non-custodial staking operations. In Ethereum, validators help process and confirm transactions and participate in securing the network. Staking services allow users to commit Ether to this process, either directly or through an arrangement managed by a service provider.
MetaMask’s website says its infrastructure manages more than $3 billion worth of staked Ether. That makes the service a significant access point for users seeking to stake ETH, although the company’s announcement did not indicate that all of this amount was involved in the incident.
MetaMask Staking is available through MetaMask Portfolio in three forms: pooled staking, validator staking and liquid staking through Lido and Rocket Pool. The announcement concerns validators operated as part of that non-custodial service, rather than stating that MetaMask wallets themselves have been compromised.
Lido outlines the expected timeline
Lido separately said MetaMask Staking had begun taking “precautionary steps to protect client assets related to its operated Ethereum validators.” The steps include exiting MetaMask Staking-operated Ethereum validators from the Lido protocol on Wednesday.
The final affected validators are expected to leave by the end of Oct. 7. Lido Finance developer Will Shannon said ETH leaving those validators should return to the protocol gradually after the validators complete the exit, withdrawal and re-entry process. He estimated that the full cycle could take up to about 45 days because of an extended queue for entering the validator set.
The timeline reflects how Ethereum staking withdrawals and re-entry are processed. It does not represent a statement that users have lost funds. MetaMask said its investigation remains ongoing, while the company and its external advisers work to assess the infrastructure issue.
