Mt. Gox Creditor Repayment Deadline Extended to October 2027

Mt. Gox’s creditor repayment deadline has been pushed back to Oct. 31, 2027, after the Tokyo District Court approved another extension. The trustee cited incomplete creditor procedures and payment-processing issues, while wallets linked to the collapsed exchange still held about 34,400 BTC.

Mt. Gox Creditor Repayment Deadline Extended to October 2027

Mt. Gox has received approval to delay its creditor repayment deadline by another year, extending the long-running rehabilitation process for the failed cryptocurrency exchange. Payments that were scheduled to be completed by Oct. 31, 2026 will now have until Oct. 31, 2027.

Court approves sixth extension

Rehabilitation trustee Nobuaki Kobayashi said the Tokyo District Court approved the new deadline. The extension applies to base payments, early lump-sum payments and intermediate payments owed to Mt. Gox creditors.

According to Cointelegraph, this is the sixth extension since 2023. The latest change follows two shorter extensions earlier in 2023 and four further changes since September of that year.

Mt. Gox was once a major cryptocurrency exchange before its collapse, and its rehabilitation process has involved identifying claims, completing creditor procedures and distributing recovered assets. The exchange began repaying creditors in Bitcoin and Bitcoin Cash in July 2024.

Why some creditors have not been paid

Kobayashi said repayments to creditors who completed the required steps without complications were largely finished, although certain payment categories remained outstanding. Many other creditors have yet to receive funds because they have not completed the necessary procedures, while some payments encountered processing problems.

The trustee’s latest notice did not specify either the number of creditors still awaiting repayment or the amount of Bitcoin that remains to be distributed. In March 2025, Mt. Gox said more than 19,500 creditors had received repayments.

Wallets linked to Mt. Gox still held approximately 34,400 BTC, valued at about $2.8 billion, as of Tuesday, based on data from blockchain-intelligence firm Arkham Intelligence. The amount held in those wallets does not establish how much will ultimately be distributed to creditors, and the latest trustee notice did not provide a remaining distribution total.

The new deadline means the Mt. Gox rehabilitation process will remain unresolved for some creditors for at least another year. The extension also leaves the timing of any remaining Bitcoin and Bitcoin Cash distributions dependent on creditors completing procedures and outstanding payment issues being addressed.
