NEAR Protocol’s native token has moved into the top 20 cryptocurrencies by market capitalization after a sharp 30-day rally, while activity on its cross-chain trading service NEAR Intents has passed $31 billion in cumulative transaction volume.
NEAR climbs the rankings
NEAR gained 138% over the 30 days through Thursday, according to CoinGecko. At the time of the original report, the token was trading at about $5.51, up roughly 7% over 24 hours. Its market capitalization stood near $7.2 billion, with daily trading volume of approximately $1.2 billion.
That valuation placed NEAR ahead of Stellar’s XLM, whose market capitalization was reported at nearly $7 billion. Market capitalization is calculated by multiplying an asset’s price by the number of tokens in circulation, and is commonly used to compare the relative size of cryptocurrencies.
The move gives NEAR a place among the market’s 20 largest crypto assets after a sustained rise in its price. Cointelegraph reported the development.
NEAR Intents passes $31 billion in volume
The token’s advance comes alongside continued growth in NEAR Intents, a protocol designed to facilitate trading across different blockchains. Data from the NEAR Intents Explorer showed that the service had processed more than $31 billion in cumulative transaction volume.
Transaction volume measures the total value handled through the protocol over time. It does not represent the market value of NEAR itself, but provides a separate gauge of activity connected with the ecosystem.
NEAR Intents was also affected by a security incident involving its deposit and withdrawal infrastructure. The exploit resulted in $3.8 million being stolen last week. Alex Shevchenko, the service’s general manager, said on Oct. 2 that all the stolen funds had been returned, one day after the breach was disclosed.
First US spot product adds access
Another development accompanying NEAR’s rise was the launch of the first US spot exchange-traded product tracking the token on Sept. 29. The Bitwise fund trades on NYSE Arca under the ticker NRR.
An exchange-traded product gives investors exposure through a listed market instrument rather than requiring them to hold the underlying cryptocurrency directly. The launch therefore created a US-listed route for gaining exposure to NEAR, although it does not change the token’s underlying supply or market capitalization.
