Cryptocurrency exchange OKX has secured a new, undisclosed amount of funding at a valuation of $25 billion, bringing existing investors and strategic partners back into the company’s ownership story as it pursues a broader role in financial technology.
According to Cointelegraph, the latest financing includes Standard Chartered’s investment arm SC Ventures, quantitative investment firm Qube Research & Technologies, blockchain company Ripple and stablecoin issuer Circle. OKX announced the participation in a Tuesday press release, but did not provide the total amount raised.
Funding extends March investment round
The transaction is an extension of a funding round announced in March. That earlier round brought in $200 million from Intercontinental Exchange, or ICE, the parent company of the New York Stock Exchange. It valued OKX at the same $25 billion level.
The latest financing therefore does not establish a new valuation for the exchange. Instead, it adds capital from a group of existing partners and investors while maintaining the valuation reached in the March transaction. The amount contributed by each participant, and the combined size of the new investment, were not disclosed.
OKX is one of the companies seeking to expand beyond the traditional role of a cryptocurrency exchange. Exchanges generally provide platforms where users can buy, sell and trade digital assets. A broader financial-technology platform could include services and infrastructure that connect crypto-based systems with more conventional financial-market practices.
OKX targets broader financial technology role
Star Xu, OKX’s founder and chief executive, said the new capital would support the company’s transition into a “broader global financial technology platform.” He described the intended direction as combining crypto technology with the standards expected from global financial institutions.
The announcement comes alongside a separate development involving OKX and ICE. On Monday, a joint venture between the two companies filed with the US Securities and Exchange Commission to launch a platform for trading tokenized stocks under the regulator’s new innovation exemption.
Tokenized stocks are digital representations of shares or related financial interests recorded using blockchain technology. The filing indicates that the proposed platform would connect OKX’s crypto-market capabilities with an effort to develop digital forms of traditional securities trading. The source material does not state when the platform may launch or provide further details about its structure.
