OKX has secured fresh funding from investors including Circle, Ripple, Standard Chartered’s SC Ventures and Qube Research & Technologies, keeping the crypto exchange’s valuation at $25 billion.
The latest financing extends a round completed in March, when Intercontinental Exchange, the owner of the New York Stock Exchange, invested about $200 million in OKX at the same valuation. OKX did not disclose how much capital it raised this time. The new financing was reported by Decrypt.
New investors join OKX’s backers
The investor group brings together companies with different positions across digital assets and traditional finance. Circle is the issuer of the USDC stablecoin, Ripple is a crypto-focused financial technology company, and SC Ventures is the investment arm of British bank Standard Chartered. London-based quantitative hedge fund Qube Research & Technologies is new to OKX’s ownership group.
OKX global managing partner Haider Rafique said the funding would support the exchange’s “long-term market infrastructure.” QRT quantitative trading director Thomas Eaton said the firm’s investment reflected confidence in the long-term growth of digital assets and markets that operate around the clock.
QRT was spun out of Credit Suisse and already operates a crypto fund with about $1 billion in holdings, according to the source material.
Tokenized shares at the center of the partnership
The financing follows the strategic relationship between OKX and ICE, which began in March. Their joint venture, OKXICE LLC, is seeking regulatory approval to offer tokenized shares in 63 US public companies.
The proposed list includes Nvidia, Apple and Coca-Cola. Tokenized stocks are digital representations of shares that can be issued and traded on a blockchain. Under the Securities and Exchange Commission’s innovation exemption, qualifying venues may trade tokenized US equities on public blockchains without registering as national securities exchanges for up to five years.
The exemption applies only to tokens carrying the same rights as ordinary shares, including voting rights and dividends. Synthetic products that only follow a stock’s price are not covered. The rules also limit the number of stocks a venue can list and give each company 30 days to object to a third party tokenizing its shares. As a result, the companies named in the proposed offering would retain the ability to block their stock from appearing on the venue.
OKX’s broader equity push
OKX has been expanding its equity-related products through other channels. The exchange has already listed perpetual futures linked to the so-called Magnificent Seven technology stocks and to the S&P 500.
The unchanged valuation means the latest funding did not mark an increase from the $25 billion level established in March. The participation of Circle, Ripple, a major bank-backed investment arm and QRT nevertheless links OKX’s next phase of infrastructure development to both crypto-native finance and established financial institutions.
