Ondo launches tokenized access to private pre-IPO AI company

Ondo Finance is moving beyond tokenized public-market assets with a new platform designed to give eligible investors economic exposure to private companies, beginning with an unnamed artificial-intelligence business before its initial public offering.

How Ondo Private Markets works

The platform, called Ondo Private Markets, will issue tokenized notes linked to the value realized for each common share of a referenced company when a qualifying liquidity event occurs. Investors will not directly own shares in the underlying business. Instead, the notes are structured to provide economic exposure through a tokenized instrument.

Eligible investors will be able to keep the notes in self-custody wallets and trade them on secondary markets at any time, according to the company. Ondo said the first products are expected to begin trading this week. It plans to introduce additional notes connected to companies in areas including robotics, cybersecurity, biotechnology and infrastructure.

The first company has not been named, and the source material does not disclose the size of the offering or the valuation of the business.

Ondo’s broader tokenization push

Tokenization involves representing an asset or an economic claim on a blockchain. In this case, Ondo is applying the model to private-market exposure, where access can be more restricted than in public stock markets and where the underlying companies have not yet completed an IPO.

Ondo already operates Ondo Stocks, a platform for tokenized US stocks and exchange-traded funds. The company says that platform has more than $1 billion in total value locked and offers over 450 tokenized stocks and ETFs.

The new private-markets initiative reflects the wider effort by financial and digital-asset firms to make private-company exposure available through blockchain-based products. According to Cointelegraph, Robinhood’s venture fund invested $75 million in OpenAI common stock in April, giving retail investors exposure through a publicly traded closed-end fund. Citi was also reported in June to be preparing a blockchain marketplace for private-company shares.
