OpenAI Acquires Orchestra Bio to Automate Drug Development Operations

OpenAI has acquired Orchestra Bio, a San Francisco startup that develops AI agents for managing the complex operational work behind drug-development programs, and plans to fold its team and technology into Rosalind, the company’s suite of tools for life-science researchers.

The financial terms were not disclosed. According to Decrypt, the transaction comes as OpenAI and Anthropic compete to establish a role for AI in the workflows that take a potential medicine from scientific discovery through testing and, eventually, regulatory approval.

What Orchestra Bio’s technology does

Orchestra’s software is designed to monitor the many connected tasks, milestones and deadlines involved in developing a drug. Its agents can assess how a problem in one part of a program may affect other activities, collect relevant information and compare possible responses.

One example is a failed manufacturing batch. Rather than treating the setback as an isolated event, the system can map how it may affect the wider development plan, including tasks and deadlines that could be delayed. Scientists and program leaders remain responsible for deciding what to do; the AI is intended to organize information and outline options rather than make the final call.

That distinction matters because drug development involves more than laboratory research. Companies typically coordinate internal scientific and operational teams with outside organizations, including contract research organizations that conduct studies and contract manufacturers that produce experimental medicines. These groups may use separate systems that do not easily exchange information.

OpenAI said its broader aim is to help scientists make discoveries and manage the work required to turn those discoveries into treatments that reach patients sooner. The company has said that moving a medicine from its initial idea to approval in the United States can take as long as 15 years.

The economics of the process help explain why companies are interested in tools that could reduce delays or improve coordination. OpenAI said bringing a single approved drug to market can cost more than $2.6 billion, while fewer than 10% of candidates that enter human testing ultimately reach pharmacy shelves.

Orchestra will join OpenAI’s Rosalind platform

Orchestra’s team and platform will be integrated into Rosalind, OpenAI’s collection of models and tools for biology and chemistry. OpenAI launched GPT-Rosalind in April as a model focused on biology and drug discovery, making it available to vetted U.S. enterprise customers including Amgen and Moderna.

The company also offers Rosalind Workbench, which connects the model with scientific tools and data so researchers can examine results and plan experiments. In OpenAI’s description, Rosalind helps researchers determine what to test, while Orchestra’s technology is intended to manage the operational work that follows a promising finding.

The combined team is expected to build agents that link scientific results with subsequent decisions, tasks and studies needed to advance a potential medicine. OpenAI did not say when Orchestra’s agents will become available inside Rosalind, and it did not disclose the purchase price.

Orchestra was founded in the fall of 2022. It raised a seed round from Andreessen Horowitz, Definition Capital, Insight Partners and 8VC, and had raised about $20 million in total, according to Caplight data. The company is separate from Orchestra BioMed, an unrelated medical-device company listed on Nasdaq under the symbol OBIO.

A wider race among AI laboratories

The acquisition adds to OpenAI’s growing presence in scientific and healthcare software. In January, the company launched ChatGPT Health, which allows users to connect medical records to the chatbot, and acquired records startup Torch for a reported $100 million to support that effort. It also turned Crixet, a scientific-writing tool it acquired, into Prism, a platform for researchers.

OpenAI has indicated that it wants to capture value from AI applications in science through more than conventional subscriptions. In a January blog post, Chief Financial Officer Sarah Friar said licensing, intellectual-property agreements and outcome-based pricing could become part of the business model as AI expands into drug discovery and related fields.

Anthropic, OpenAI’s closest rival, has pursued a similar strategy. It bought AI biotech startup Coefficient Bio for roughly $400 million in April and introduced a research platform called Claude Science in June. In September, Anthropic said its Claude model helped identify a previously unknown enzyme system resembling CRISPR, although some scientists argued that the significance of the finding had been overstated.

The Orchestra deal therefore places OpenAI deeper into a contest over the workflow surrounding medicine development, not only the scientific questions researchers ask. Its immediate scope is operational: tracking programs, highlighting consequences of setbacks and helping teams compare responses while leaving decisions to human experts.
