OpenAI has released GPT-6.1 Terra, a new version of its mid-range artificial-intelligence model that the company says is faster, more accurate on computer-based tasks and 50% cheaper for developers using its standard application programming interface (API).
Lower prices and wider availability
The model was released on October 26 and is available to Plus, Pro, Enterprise and Edu users through ChatGPT Work and Codex. Developers can access it under the model name gpt-6.1-terra.
The 50% reduction applies to standard API prices, meaning the rates paid by developers that connect OpenAI’s model to their own software and services. OpenAI described the release as a significant improvement over GPT-5.6 Terra while maintaining its position as the everyday model in the company’s lineup.
Terra is designed for routine office and computer-use tasks. In this context, computer use refers to an AI system interpreting what is displayed on a screen and interacting with applications by clicking, typing and navigating in a manner similar to a person. ChatGPT Work’s agent mode can operate across applications, browse websites and complete tasks, while Codex is OpenAI’s coding tool.
Free users continue to receive access to the lower-tier GPT-5.6 Luna. For more demanding research and complex coding, OpenAI directs users to GPT-6.1 Sol or GPT-6 Astra.
OpenAI reports large test improvements
According to Decrypt, OpenAI’s internal testing showed a sharp decline in factual errors when the model was given a low reasoning setting. The rate fell to 16.7% for GPT-6.1 Terra from 53.6% for GPT-5.6 Terra. A reasoning setting controls how much time the model spends processing a response.
At maximum reasoning effort, the reported factual-error rate dropped by 18 percentage points to 4.3%.
OpenAI also compared the models on Terminal-Bench 4.0, a test of coding agents completing tasks through a computer’s command-line terminal. GPT-6.1 Terra completed 50.3% of tasks at maximum effort, compared with 21.5% for GPT-5.6 Terra.
The company said Terra completes tasks more than three times faster on average than GPT-6 Astra and GPT-6.1 Sol. The performance and error figures come from OpenAI’s own testing; the factual-error assessment was an internal test.
Terra’s place in OpenAI’s lineup
OpenAI first introduced Terra on June 26 as part of the GPT-5.6 family in a limited preview requested by the Donald Trump administration. It became publicly available on July 9, positioned as a model that could compete with GPT-5.5 at about half the cost.
The company launched GPT-6 Sol and Luna in September, shortly after Anthropic released Claude Opus 5.5. That launch did not include a new Terra model, making GPT-6.1 Terra the latest update to OpenAI’s everyday model tier.
