OpenAI is seeking at least $30 billion in new funding at a valuation of about $1.4 trillion, excluding the new capital, after postponing plans for an initial public offering beyond 2026. The fundraising would give the ChatGPT developer additional resources before a potential future stock-market listing, according to CoinDesk, citing Bloomberg.
Fundraising follows delayed IPO
The proposed valuation marks a significant increase from OpenAI’s most recent fundraising. The company raised $122 billion in March at a valuation of $852 billion, including that investment.
OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman has said the company would not go public this year. He pointed to heightened artificial-intelligence safety concerns and the difficulty of adapting to increasingly capable AI systems. The company’s decision to seek private capital allows it to pursue further expansion without relying on an immediate public offering.
An IPO, or initial public offering, is the process through which a private company sells shares to public-market investors for the first time. Delaying that step means OpenAI remains dependent on private funding while continuing to develop and commercialize its products.
Revenue and products continue to expand
OpenAI’s financial momentum has accelerated alongside its efforts to broaden its product range. Its annualized revenue run rate exceeded $40 billion over the summer, and Bloomberg reported that the figure had risen 70% since July.
A revenue run rate estimates what a company would generate over a full year if its current pace of revenue continued. It is not the same as reported annual revenue, but it is commonly used to indicate the scale and direction of a fast-growing business.
OpenAI has also introduced additional commercial offerings. These include Dots, described as an always-on AI agent, and a subscription tier priced at $500. The expansion illustrates the company’s effort to generate revenue from a wider range of AI tools while it invests in increasingly advanced systems.
Anthropic raises competitive pressure
OpenAI’s financing plans come as rival AI company Anthropic prepares for a possible public listing. Anthropic is expected to go public in November, according to the source material, and its IPO prospectus outlines plans to spend $518 billion on cloud computing and infrastructure.
The potential listing could value Anthropic at more than $2 trillion. That prospective valuation would put the rival ahead of the valuation OpenAI is seeking, although the two figures relate to separate companies and fundraising or listing circumstances.
