Polymarket CEO Warns Crypto’s 100x Token Chase Is a Game of ‘Irrational Exuberance’

Polymarket CEO Shayne Coplan said the race to find the next 100x cryptocurrency token resembles irrational exuberance, as traders attempt to sell before prices collapse. He contrasted that speculation with prediction markets, where participants trade contracts tied to future events and defined probabilities.

Polymarket CEO Warns Crypto’s 100x Token Chase Is a Game of ‘Irrational Exuberance’

The race to identify the next cryptocurrency capable of multiplying 100 times is increasingly resembling a speculative contest in which traders try to sell before prices collapse, Polymarket chief executive Shayne Coplan said at Token2049 Singapore.

Coplan described the behavior as a form of “irrational exuberance” and compared it with a game of “hot potato.” His comments, reported by Cointelegraph, focused on the difference between chasing extreme gains in digital assets and trading contracts tied to the outcomes of future events.

The 100x-token race

According to Coplan, some market participants knowingly buy tokens they believe have little or no underlying value because they hope to sell them at a much higher price. The strategy depends on finding another buyer before the token’s price falls sharply, potentially all the way back to zero.

“People think they’re buying something, it’s worthless, but they’re buying it. If it can go to 100X, they want to sell it before it goes back to zero,” Coplan said during a fireside chat at the Singapore event.

He acknowledged that this approach can create substantial wealth for some traders. At the same time, he argued that it is driven by exuberance and momentum rather than a predictable path to returns. Assets that rise rapidly can also lose value, leaving participants competing to exit before sentiment changes.

The idea of irrational exuberance is associated with economist Robert J. Shiller, whose 2000 book of the same name examined how optimism can spread through psychological behavior, social influences and feedback loops. In cryptocurrency markets, the appeal of rapid wealth creation has helped draw traders toward highly speculative altcoins, although identifying the eventual winners remains difficult.

BitMEX co-founder Arthur Hayes argued in December that an altcoin season had not ended, while also saying traders had missed most of the cycle’s major winners. That view underlines the timing challenge facing participants who attempt to enter a token before a sharp rally has already occurred.

Prediction markets offer a different risk profile

Coplan said Polymarket’s user growth suggests that some traders are moving toward opportunities with more defined probabilities instead of searching for the next token to deliver extraordinary returns.

Prediction markets allow participants to trade contracts linked to whether a future event will happen. Unlike a token that can theoretically multiply many times in value, these contracts generally have a more limited payoff. Coplan said there is “no exponential upside” on Polymarket, but argued that informed traders continue to participate because they are wagering on events with comparatively more predictable odds.

The distinction does not mean prediction markets are free of risk. Their results can depend on the quality of available information, the structure of a contract and the accuracy of participants’ judgments. However, the trading objective differs from the pursuit of an asset that might rise 100-fold in a short period.

DefiLlama data cited in the report placed Polymarket as the second-largest prediction market, with $1.21 billion in prediction volume during the previous seven days. Kalshi was listed as the largest, with $2.3 billion over the same period.

A December report from 10x Research described prediction markets as an emerging battleground for the crypto economy. It said data-focused traders may benefit from information gaps and spreads created when less experienced participants enter markets in pursuit of quick gains.

Regulation remains a central issue

The expansion of prediction markets has also brought greater scrutiny from regulators in the United States and elsewhere. More than a dozen US states have taken legal action involving Polymarket, Kalshi or both over contracts linked to sports events. Authorities in several countries have also blocked or restricted access to Polymarket.

JPMorgan Chase reportedly ended a banking relationship with Polymarket on August 14 because of regulatory concerns, although the bank remained interested in a possible underwriting role if Polymarket pursued a public listing, according to the source material.

These legal and banking developments form an important backdrop to the sector’s growth. Prediction markets may attract traders seeking a clearer framework for assessing probabilities, but their expansion continues alongside questions about which contracts should be permitted and how they should be supervised.

Current market picture

Moneyiar market data at 09:19 on October 8, 2026, showed mixed performance among selected crypto assets:

  • Uniswap (UNI) was priced at $7.7713421493, down 3.82% over 24 hours and 13.45% over seven days.
  • Polygon (prev. MATIC) (POL) was priced at $0.1013379863, down 1.02% over 24 hours and 9.38% over seven days. The supplied data also lists Polygon under the symbol MATIC without a price.
  • Ethereum Name Service (ENS) was priced at $6.6133886279, up 1.77% over 24 hours but down 4.44% over seven days.

The figures illustrate the short-term volatility and uneven performance that can accompany cryptocurrency trading, even without the extreme target implied by the search for a 100x token. Coplan’s comments suggest that the appeal of prediction markets lies partly in offering a different kind of market exposure, one based on event probabilities rather than the hope of discovering the next explosive crypto asset.
