Nine Public Companies Object to OKX-ICE Tokenized Stock Platform

Nine listed companies have objected to plans by crypto exchange OKX and Intercontinental Exchange (ICE), the parent company of the New York Stock Exchange, to offer their shares in tokenized form. The objections raise a central question for blockchain-based securities markets: can platforms create digital representations of public-company shares without the companies’ approval?

The companies named in a notice from OKX and ICE were Cerebras Systems, AppLovin, Applied Digital, Rocket Lab, CoreWeave, Verizon Communications, Applied Optoelectronics, Broadcom and UnitedHealth Group. The notice did not explain why any of the companies objected.

According to Cointelegraph, the objections were submitted under a framework connected to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission’s Sept. 17 announcement of an innovation exemption. That framework requires a tokenized venue to notify an issuer in writing and give it an opportunity to object before listing a tokenized version of a third party’s stock.

A tokenized stock is a blockchain-based digital representation linked to the value or economic exposure of a company’s publicly traded shares. Such products are part of a broader effort to put traditional financial assets on blockchain networks, potentially allowing them to be transferred and used in digital-market infrastructure. The dispute in this case is not simply about the technology itself, but about who controls the venue, how prices are formed and what protections apply to the underlying shares.

Why the objections matter for tokenized markets

The nine companies’ response creates a significant test for the proposed OKX-ICE platform. If public companies can prevent their shares from being offered on a particular venue, tokenized-stock platforms may need to secure issuer cooperation rather than assume that a listed share can be represented digitally without the company’s involvement.

Robin Nordnes, chief executive of trading validation platform Raiku, told Cointelegraph that issuers’ concern was not necessarily blockchain technology. In his view, the issue was uncertainty about how trading on a new venue could affect the share price. He also pointed to the role of blockchain validators in determining transaction order on a public chain, arguing that firms need a way to measure execution quality before claims about best execution can be assessed.

That concern relates to a basic feature of markets: the same asset can show different prices or trading conditions across venues. Tokenized offerings could introduce another marketplace with its own order-handling processes, liquidity and participants. The source material does not state that any of the nine companies experienced a pricing problem; it says the objections highlight concerns about what could happen when their shares trade on the proposed venue.

OKX had been approached for comment on the implications of the objections but had not responded by the time of publication.

Industry seeks evidence before wider adoption

Misha Putiatin, co-founder of collateral-markets platform Symbiotic, said companies need to see the potential benefits and a record of efficient pricing before becoming more comfortable with tokenized stock offerings. He also said more real-world data would help market participants evaluate both the advantages and risks.

Putiatin pointed to other institutional tokenization efforts, including tokenization services from the Depository Trust and Clearing Corporation, as initiatives that could build confidence in the market. The reference reflects the broader push to develop infrastructure for digital versions of traditional assets beyond crypto-native platforms.

Luke Nolan, a senior research associate at CoinShares, described the companies’ action as a venue-specific veto rather than a rejection of tokenization as a whole. He said a company might object to having its shares offered on one platform while potentially permitting or launching a tokenized product elsewhere.

Nolan also said the companies’ concerns were valid because market participants have previously used particular market mechanics to create squeezes or short-term moves in an underlying asset’s price. His comments point to the need for tokenized venues to demonstrate how their trading rules, liquidity and links to conventional markets would work in practice.

The issue is developing as blockchain-based financial assets continue to attract capital. OnchainBenchmark data cited in the report showed that more than $754 million moved onchain during the previous 30 days, while the combined value across stablecoins and tokenized assets reached $320 billion. Stablecoins are blockchain tokens designed to maintain a stable value, while tokenized assets represent claims or exposure connected to traditional financial instruments.

Current market picture

Moneyiar market data at 22:14 on Oct. 19, 2026, showed mixed performance among the tracked assets:

  • Ethereum was priced at $2407.6198576669, up 0.83% over 24 hours but down 3.43% over seven days.
  • Compound was at $21.5762235448, gaining 2.77% in 24 hours while falling 8.81% over seven days.
  • Sentient stood at $0.0223782479, up 0.84% over 24 hours and 8.2% over seven days.
  • Four traded at $0.2484064515, rising 4.63% over 24 hours but declining 10.78% over seven days.

The OKX-ICE dispute now puts issuer consent, trading quality and market oversight at the centre of the tokenized-stock debate. Its outcome could help clarify whether tokenized shares are treated as products that platforms can independently create and distribute, or as offerings that require a closer relationship with the companies whose stocks they represent.
