Abstract, the Ethereum layer-2 network developed by Pudgy Penguins parent company Igloo Inc., will shut down on Dec. 15 after failing to build a sustainable standalone business focused on consumer crypto. Users have been told to remove their assets before the deadline, as funds left on the network afterward will be inaccessible.
According to Decrypt, Abstract announced the closure on X and said users can move assets through its Migration Hub or native bridge. Transfers using the native bridge are subject to a three-hour delay. The team also said its engineers would support projects built on Abstract as they move to other networks.
Why Abstract is closing
Abstract said its expansion was held back by several structural challenges: a limited decentralized-finance ecosystem, thin liquidity on the network, limited crossover with institutional users and a smaller budget than competing chains. The team said operating a network dedicated exclusively to consumer crypto had not proved sustainable as an independent model.
The network was designed to host consumer-focused crypto applications aimed at everyday users. Igloo had hoped to build on the mainstream visibility achieved by Pudgy Penguins through toys and social media, positioning Abstract as a destination for applications and brands seeking to reach similar audiences.
Abstract is a ZK-rollup, a type of layer-2 that bundles transactions and verifies them on Ethereum using zero-knowledge proofs. Layer-2 networks are designed to process activity separately from the underlying blockchain while using it for settlement or verification.
Abstract’s reported activity
Despite the shutdown, Abstract said it had processed more than 325 million transactions and recorded more than $6 billion in decentralized-exchange volume. The team also reported more than $40 million in ecosystem revenue and said users had created over 4 million Abstract Global Wallets.
Brands including Red Bull Racing and Disney used the network to reach audiences, according to the project. Abstract said it would help applications developed on the chain migrate elsewhere, but did not identify replacement networks in the announcement.
The closure follows the decision by Blast, another Ethereum layer-2, to wind down. Blast, which was backed by Paradigm and had previously attracted billions of dollars in deposits, said its operating expenses exceeded revenue. Abstract is therefore the second Ethereum layer-2 to announce a shutdown within days.
Market picture
Moneyiar data at 10:29 a.m. on Oct. 7, 2026, showed Ethereum at $2,587.6199526294, down 4.67% over 24 hours and 3.87% over seven days. Solana was $117.8056397551, down 1.78% in 24 hours and 1.5% over seven days, according to Moneyiar data at 10:28 a.m.
Shiba Inu stood at $0.0000055009, down 6.49% over 24 hours and 5.27% over seven days. Uniswap was $8.0528608424, down 9.63% over 24 hours and 8.73% over seven days, based on Moneyiar data at 10:29 a.m.
Abstract also warned users about impersonators, fake migration websites and direct messages falsely claiming to represent the project. Users moving funds should rely only on the official migration tools identified by the team.
