Reddit to End RSS Feeds and Public API Access as It Targets AI Scraping

Reddit will end RSS feeds on November 13, 2026, and close public API access in stages through March 2027. The company cites automated scraping and abuse, while directing developers to its Devvit platform and offering a $1 million migration program.

Reddit to End RSS Feeds and Public API Access as It Targets AI Scraping

Reddit is ending RSS feeds and phasing out public access to its application programming interface as the company moves to limit automated scraping and push developers toward its own platform.

RSS feeds will stop working on November 13, 2026. Reddit said there will be no replacement for people using RSS outside communities they moderate. New requests for public API access will stop on October 31, while the remaining public access is scheduled to close in March 2027.

The changes could affect third-party apps, bots, alerts and moderation tools that rely on Reddit data. According to Decrypt, Reddit described the measures as part of a broader effort to modernize its infrastructure, improve tools for moderators and make it harder for bad actors to copy content or abuse its communities automatically.

What Reddit is changing

RSS, or Really Simple Syndication, allows software to check a website for new material without a user manually visiting the page. Reddit’s feeds have therefore been used by tools that monitor posts, send alerts or support other workflows.

An API, or application programming interface, provides a structured way for software to request information from an online service. Reddit’s public API has supported a range of external applications and bots, including utilities used by communities and moderators.

The timetable announced by Reddit includes several stages:

  • New requests for public API access end October 31, 2026.
  • Apps and users that have not registered or responded to Reddit’s outreach begin losing access on January 12, 2027.
  • All remaining public access to the API closes in March 2027.
  • RSS feeds stop working on November 13, 2026.

Reddit is directing developers to Devvit, its Developer Platform, where apps can be rebuilt. It is also offering a $1 million App Migration Program. Eligible apps that move to the platform can receive $1,000 payments and free hosting, with applications due by November 30, 2026.

More than 14,000 apps and bots have registered so far, Reddit said. DeltaBot, MagicEyeBot and RemindMeBot are among the popular services that have either completed migration or are close to doing so.

Moderators who use RSS for alerts have been pointed to a Devvit application called Discord Relay. Reddit said, however, that users who rely on RSS outside a community they moderate will not have a replacement.

The fight over Reddit’s data

Reddit’s stated reason for the restrictions is the large-scale copying of material by scrapers and what it calls automated abuse. The site contains years of user-generated answers and discussions, making it a potentially valuable source of text for automated systems and AI model development.

The company began charging developers for API access in 2023, a move that was followed by protests in which thousands of subreddits temporarily went dark. Reddit later entered a roughly $60 million-a-year licensing agreement with Google in early 2024 that allowed Google to use Reddit posts to train AI models. A deal with OpenAI followed in May of that year.

Reddit has also taken legal action against companies it says collected its data without authorization. In June 2025, it sued Anthropic, alleging that bots linked to the company accessed Reddit’s servers more than 100,000 times after Anthropic had said it stopped. In October 2025, Reddit sued Perplexity and three data-scraping firms, accusing them of bypassing its protections. Perplexity and SerpApi have disputed the claims.

The dispute has also involved allegations about how automated crawlers present themselves online. Cloudflare accused Perplexity in August 2025 of disguising its crawlers as ordinary Chrome browsers to evade blocks. Perplexity disputes that allegation.

Reddit said logged-out access was the largest source of abusive scraping on Old Reddit, the older version of its website. In the coming months, Old Reddit will be restricted to logged-in users who have used it during the previous six months. Moderators will retain access.

What users and developers should expect

The immediate impact will vary by how an app connects to Reddit. Moderation tools and bots that migrate to Devvit may continue operating, while services whose developers do not make the move could stop working after the relevant deadlines.

For everyday users, the changes may be most visible through the loss of small utilities rather than through Reddit’s core website. Reminder bots, moderation helpers and notification feeds are examples of tools that could be affected. The January 12 cutoff applies first to unregistered apps and users, while the broader public API shutdown is planned for March.

The decision also reinforces Reddit’s effort to control how its content is accessed and licensed. Rather than leave broad public channels open to outside software, the company is offering a controlled development environment and reserving access for approved uses. Reddit’s move comes as it pursues commercial AI data agreements while challenging other companies in court over alleged scraping.
