Ripple has received final approval from the U.S. Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) for a federally chartered national trust bank, completing the regulatory process that began with conditional approval in December 2025, according to Cointelegraph.
What the approval allows
The institution, named Ripple National Trust Bank (RNTB), is authorized to manage the reserves supporting Ripple USD (RLUSD), Ripple’s dollar-linked stablecoin. It can also serve as a collateral trustee for RLUSD holders and provide custody services for digital assets.
The approval gives RNTB a federal supervisory framework for those activities. Ripple CEO Brad Garlinghouse described the development on X as an example of closer cooperation between cryptocurrency companies and banks, highlighting innovation, accountability and federal oversight.
RLUSD will not be issued by RNTB. Issuance will continue through Standard Custody & Trust Company, Ripple’s limited-purpose trust company, which is regulated by the New York Department of Financial Services.
How a national trust bank differs
A national trust bank is a federally chartered institution that focuses on holding and managing assets for clients. The OCC says most such banks differ from conventional commercial banks because they generally do not take deposits or provide loans.
They also do not carry Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation insurance, according to the OCC. That distinction is important for understanding the scope of Ripple’s approval: the charter supports trust, custody and reserve-management functions rather than traditional retail banking.
For RLUSD users, the bank’s authorized role includes managing the assets intended to back the stablecoin and acting as a trustee for the benefit of token holders. The stablecoin’s issuance arrangement remains with Standard Custody & Trust Company.
Ripple joins Circle among approved crypto firms
Ripple is the second crypto company identified in the source material to receive final OCC approval for a national trust bank. Circle obtained its final approval in July.
Several other firms remain at the conditional-approval stage. Coinbase received a preliminary green light in April, while Crypto.com and Bridge, which is owned by Stripe, received conditional approvals in February. Ripple’s final approval therefore marks the completion of its chartering process, rather than an initial or provisional authorization.
