Robinhood Adds About $25 Million in Bitcoin to Corporate Balance Sheet

Robinhood has added approximately $25 million worth of bitcoin to its corporate balance sheet, according to comments from Johann Kerbrat, the company’s senior vice president and general manager of crypto and international. The company has not publicly confirmed the purchase, leaving the disclosure based on remarks made during an interview at the Digital Asset Summit Asia conference on Wednesday.

The move gives the U.S.-based financial services company direct exposure to bitcoin as a corporate treasury asset, while also highlighting the expansion of its broader cryptocurrency business.

What Robinhood disclosed

Kerbrat discussed the bitcoin allocation during an appearance on The Starting Block, a broadcast from the Digital Asset Summit Asia conference. He said the decision reflected Robinhood’s commitment to bitcoin and its surrounding ecosystem.

At the same time, he indicated that the holding is relatively small compared with the overall size of the company. Robinhood has a market capitalization in the $100 billion range, while the reported bitcoin purchase is worth about $25 million. Kerbrat therefore said the holding was not expected to materially alter the company’s current trajectory.

CoinDesk reported the disclosure and separately contacted Robinhood’s press team to ask whether the company plans to buy more bitcoin or other tokens. The source material did not include a response or confirmation from Robinhood about additional purchases.

Because the company has not confirmed the transaction, the precise timing, size and composition of the reported acquisition remain unverified beyond Kerbrat’s comments. The reported amount refers to bitcoin held on Robinhood’s corporate balance sheet, rather than cryptocurrency made available to customers through its trading services.

Robinhood joins a growing group of corporate bitcoin holders

The reported purchase places Robinhood among public companies that hold bitcoin as a treasury asset. Strategy, which is listed on Nasdaq under the ticker MSTR, began building its bitcoin position in 2020. More than 170 companies worldwide now reportedly hold bitcoin, according to the source material.

Other corporate holders named in the report include Tesla, Block, MARA Holdings, CleanSpark and Riot Platforms. Together, these companies account for well over 1.2 million bitcoin across their balance sheets.

Corporate bitcoin holdings can serve a different purpose from customer-facing crypto products. In a treasury strategy, a company buys and retains an asset on its own balance sheet. The value of that holding can rise or fall with the market price of bitcoin, creating exposure for the company itself. Robinhood’s reported allocation is notable because it comes from a large financial platform that already operates in the digital-asset market, although the reported amount is modest relative to its market capitalization.

Robinhood’s wider crypto expansion

The bitcoin disclosure comes as Robinhood broadens its cryptocurrency infrastructure and product offering. The company has more than 28 million funded customers globally and has been active in crypto trading before the reported balance-sheet purchase.

In July, Robinhood launched Robinhood Chain, an Ethereum-compatible Layer 2 network built on Arbitrum. The network is designed for tokenized real-world assets and decentralized finance, commonly known as DeFi. Tokenized assets represent claims or exposure to traditional assets through blockchain-based instruments, while DeFi services use blockchain protocols for financial functions without relying on a conventional intermediary in the same way as traditional finance.

Since its mainnet launch, Robinhood Chain has introduced tokenized stock products and a stablecoin called USDG. A stablecoin is a cryptocurrency designed to maintain a relatively stable value against another asset, typically a fiat currency. Robinhood has also added yield-bearing lending through Robinhood Earn.

The network has integrated Uniswap, a major decentralized exchange protocol, as well as blockchain infrastructure from Chainlink, Alchemy and BitGo. Together, these developments show that Robinhood’s crypto strategy extends beyond offering customers access to individual digital assets. It also includes blockchain infrastructure, tokenized securities, stablecoins and lending-related services.
