Sazmining is making Block’s Proto bitcoin mining hardware available to individual and institutional customers, giving buyers a way to own mining equipment while outsourcing its operation to a managed U.S. facility.

The Wyoming-based mining-services company said Proto immersion hashboards can now be purchased through its mining-as-a-service platform. According to Bitcoin Magazine, the equipment had previously been used largely by large-scale mining operators.

How the arrangement works

Each Proto hashboard produces about 200 terahashes per second (TH/s), a measure of computing power used to compete for Bitcoin mining rewards. The units operate at approximately 15 joules per terahash (J/TH), an efficiency measure indicating how much energy is required for each unit of computing output.

Customers own the hashboards directly. Sazmining is responsible for installing the equipment, monitoring its performance and maintaining it at a facility in the United States. Mining rewards are sent to the owner’s wallet, according to the companies’ announcement.

The service is designed to reduce the operational burden involved in mining. Owners do not need to arrange a site, power connection, cooling system or day-to-day technical supervision themselves, although the source material does not provide the purchase price or operating fees for the equipment.

Link to Block’s Proto mining business

The offering follows a multi-megawatt supply agreement between Sazmining and Proto. The companies said they expect the relationship to expand if customer demand increases.

Proto is the Bitcoin mining business of Block, the company founded by Jack Dorsey and listed as XYZ on the New York Stock Exchange. Block announced in January 2022 that it was developing an open Bitcoin mining system, with the stated goal of making mining more distributed and efficient.

Dorsey has argued that Bitcoin could support a more open financial system. Block’s wider Bitcoin-related activities have included Cash App’s ability to buy and send Bitcoin and the Bitkey self-custody wallet. In 2021, Dorsey described easier access to mining as an important part of that broader effort.

Sazmining was founded in 2018 and operates renewable-powered facilities in the United States, Paraguay and Norway. The company says its fleet’s carbon-free energy share is more than 20 percentage points above that of the Bitcoin network.
