Solana Launches Open Settlement Standard With J.P. Morgan Input

The Solana Foundation has introduced Solana DvP, an open-source delivery-versus-payment standard for institutional blockchain settlement, with design input from J.P. Morgan. The tool links asset and payment transfers in one atomic transaction and supports tokenized financial products.

Solana Launches Open Settlement Standard With J.P. Morgan Input

The Solana Foundation has launched Solana DvP, an open-source program intended to give banks and other financial institutions a standard way to settle tokenized assets and payments together on the Solana blockchain.

The tool uses delivery-versus-payment, or DvP, a core feature of traditional market infrastructure. Under DvP, ownership of an asset changes hands only when the corresponding payment is made. Solana DvP packages that arrangement into an atomic blockchain transaction: either both sides of the trade settle, or neither does.

According to Decrypt, the program was announced Monday and released under the permissive MIT open-source license. It provides institutions with a standardized application programming interface, or API, rather than requiring them to build separate, tailor-made smart contracts for each institutional transaction.

A blockchain version of delivery-versus-payment

Traditional settlement typically involves several parties, including clearinghouses, central securities depositories and custodians. That process can take a day or two and may leave capital tied up while the different stages are completed.

Solana DvP is designed to reduce that process to one transaction on a public blockchain. The asset and payment are linked so that settlement occurs together, which is intended to address the risk that one party delivers while the other does not.

Catherine Gu, the Solana Foundation’s head of product for digital assets, said atomic settlement removes counterparty risk embedded in traditional finance and gives institutions an open standard with finality in seconds instead of days. Rhodel D’souza, J.P. Morgan’s head of markets digital assets, described a shared standard for atomic DvP as foundational infrastructure for institutional market participants.

The foundation said J.P. Morgan contributed input on institutional settlement practices that helped shape the design. The program supports both SPL Token and Token-2022, including features such as permanent delegate, pausable tokens and transfer hooks that regulated issuers may require. It has also undergone external security audits.

Solana’s institutional push

The launch is part of Solana’s broader effort to attract institutional activity in tokenized real-world assets. Tokenization refers to recording ownership of assets or financial products on a blockchain, potentially allowing them to be transferred through blockchain-based infrastructure.

The foundation said it plans to add privacy features that would allow settlements to remain confidential. That development could be relevant to institutions that need transaction details protected while using shared blockchain infrastructure.

Recent activity cited by the foundation includes BlackRock’s August launch of a tokenized money market fund for stablecoin reserves, with ownership recorded on Solana as well as Ethereum. Kraken has also used Solana for its xStocks product, which offers tokenized U.S. stocks to customers outside the United States. Solana DvP is intended to provide regulated participants with a reusable settlement mechanism for such on-chain products.
