St. Cloud Financial Credit Union, a Minnesota institution founded by postal workers in 1930, has begun custodying real Bitcoin for its members, marking a notable step for a traditional cooperative financial institution entering digital assets.
According to Bitcoin Magazine, Chief Executive Officer Jed Meyer described the credit union’s patent-pending hybrid custody model, under which members retain individual ownership of their Bitcoin while the assets are held in a multisignature vault. The arrangement is designed to combine direct exposure to Bitcoin with institutional custody infrastructure.
A direct alternative to exchange-traded exposure
The model differs from buying a Bitcoin exchange-traded fund, where investors own shares in a fund that tracks Bitcoin’s price rather than holding the cryptocurrency directly. St. Cloud’s approach allows members to buy and sell Bitcoin through the credit union while maintaining ownership of specific Bitcoin held in the custody system.
The credit union’s work also covers more than Bitcoin transactions. Meyer discussed stablecoins and dollars as emerging money networks, as well as the potential role of cooperative financial institutions in providing digital-asset services. A stablecoin is a digital token designed to maintain a relatively stable value against an underlying reference asset, commonly the U.S. dollar.
Quiet growth in member holdings
St. Cloud Financial Credit Union has accumulated more than 20 BTC in member vaults, Meyer said. The source describes that growth as occurring without an intentional effort to reach a particular Bitcoin total.
The institution is also examining Lightning plans. The Lightning Network is a system built to enable Bitcoin transactions outside the main blockchain, potentially supporting faster transfers between participating users. The source does not provide a launch date or further operational details for St. Cloud’s plans.
Meyer additionally addressed the requirements for a credit union to own Bitcoin, Minnesota custody law, examinations by the National Credit Union Administration and the proposed CLARITY Act. The discussion included the credit union’s “Cloud Dollar” stablecoin and a cooperative ownership model, but the source does not specify a launch date, supply or market value for that asset.

The St. Cloud initiative illustrates how a member-owned financial institution is seeking to put Bitcoin custody and trading services within an established credit-union framework. Meyer also emphasized the importance of educating skeptical members and building institutional “rails” for digital assets, while the source noted that the views expressed were informational and did not constitute investment, legal, tax or accounting advice.
