Strategy has added 250 Bitcoin to its corporate holdings, taking its total balance to 848,250 BTC, while keeping billions of dollars in reserve for preferred-stock dividends and debt interest.
According to Cointelegraph, the company spent $21.5 million on the latest purchase during the week from Monday through Sunday. About $21 million was funded through sales of Strategy’s common stock, while the remaining $500,000 came from existing cash.
The purchase marks a second consecutive week in which Strategy’s Bitcoin acquisition was smaller than the previous week. The company, led by founder and executive chair Michael Saylor, has continued to build its Bitcoin position while also managing its preferred-stock and financing obligations.
Bitcoin purchase and funding
Strategy announced that its Bitcoin holdings had reached 848,250 BTC after the latest transaction. Saylor had signaled the purchase in a Sunday post using the message, “There’s always room for more orange.”
The company generally reports its Bitcoin purchases in filings with the US Securities and Exchange Commission. However, the SEC was closed on Monday for the Columbus Day holiday, so the purchase was announced through Strategy’s website.
The latest addition was relatively small compared with the size of Strategy’s overall Bitcoin portfolio. The company’s holdings increased by only 0.2% during the third quarter, when it acquired 7,218 BTC while selling 5,553 BTC.
Reserves and preferred-stock activity
Alongside the Bitcoin purchase, Strategy continued buying back its STRC preferred stock. It spent $192.4 million on those repurchases during the week, compared with $176.3 million the previous week.
Strategy said it maintains a $4.88 billion US Reserve to support dividend payments on its preferred stock and interest payments on debt. Separately, its USD Cash balance stood at $640.5 million as of Sunday.
The figures highlight the two parts of Strategy’s balance-sheet strategy: maintaining a large Bitcoin position while retaining liquidity for obligations connected to its preferred securities and borrowings. Preferred stock is a type of company security that generally carries dividend payments ahead of common-stock dividends, although the source material does not specify the terms of Strategy’s securities.
