Strategy Sets Bitcoin Holdings Record After $142.7 Million Purchase

Strategy has increased its Bitcoin holdings to a record 847,666 BTC after purchasing 1,665 coins for $142.7 million, while also repurchasing $151.7 million of its STRC preferred stock.

The company made the Bitcoin purchase between September 21 and September 27 at an average price of $85,681 per coin, according to a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. The latest acquisition moves Strategy above its previous record of 847,363 BTC, reported on June 22.

The company funded the purchase through the sale of its MSTR common stock. During the week, Strategy sold 1.47 million MSTR shares through its at-the-market offering program, generating $246.2 million in net proceeds. It allocated $142.7 million to Bitcoin and used $103.5 million to repurchase preferred stock. According to Decrypt, the latest disclosure marks a renewed increase in Strategy’s Bitcoin holdings after the company reduced its position during the summer.

Bitcoin holdings return to a record

Strategy now holds 847,666 BTC acquired for a total of $63.95 billion. Its average purchase price across the holding is $75,437 per Bitcoin, according to the company’s filing.

The latest purchase follows a period in which Strategy sold Bitcoin rather than adding to its reserves. Previous disclosures showed that the company sold 6,948 BTC between May and August. It began rebuilding its holdings in August, and the latest purchase represents its second consecutive week of buying after that selling period.

The size of the balance sheet position makes each purchase relevant to the company’s capital-allocation decisions. Strategy is using proceeds from newly issued common stock to acquire Bitcoin, while also directing part of the same funding toward repurchases of preferred securities. The latest filing therefore provides details on both sides of its approach: increasing its Bitcoin exposure and managing its outstanding preferred stock.

STRC repurchases continue

Alongside the Bitcoin acquisition, Strategy bought back 1.53 million shares of its Variable Rate Series A Perpetual Stretch Preferred Stock, which trades under the ticker STRC, for $151.7 million.

The company has been repurchasing STRC while the preferred stock trades below its stated amount. Its latest filing said $723.5 million remains available under its digital credit securities repurchase program.

Strategy has described the STRC transactions as part of its broader capital-allocation strategy. The company also proposed daily dividend accruals last week for several of its preferred-stock series, including STRF, STRC, SREK and STRD. The proposal was presented as an effort to reduce volatility in those securities.

The company’s weekly funding breakdown shows that not all of its capital activity came from new MSTR share sales. Strategy used $48.1 million from its USD Cash balance for the STRC repurchases and $22.1 million from its USD Reserve to pay dividends on preferred stock.

$6.02 billion in dollar assets

Strategy reported $6.02 billion in USD assets as of September 27. This consisted of a $5.02 billion USD Reserve and $1 billion in USD Cash.

The USD Reserve is dedicated to paying dividends on preferred stock and interest on the company’s debt. USD Cash is held separately and can be used for Bitcoin purchases, additions to the reserve and other capital-management purposes.

That cash position gives Strategy another funding source as it manages three competing priorities: its Bitcoin holdings, obligations to preferred-stock investors and debt-related expenses. The company has previously said its capital framework allows it to sell as much as $1.25 billion of Bitcoin to fund the USD Reserve, preferred-stock dividends, interest expenses and repurchases of MSTR or preferred securities.

For now, however, the latest disclosure shows an increase in Bitcoin holdings rather than a sale. Strategy’s total of 847,666 BTC is its highest reported level to date.
