Strategy bought 267 more bitcoin for slightly over $22 million, lifting its holdings to 848,517 BTC and October spending to $73 million. The company also repurchased $193.1 million of STRC preferred stock as its shares faced monthly and yearly declines.

Strategy, the bitcoin treasury company formerly known as MicroStrategy, has purchased another 267 BTC, taking its holdings to 848,517 coins. The company spent slightly more than $22 million on the latest acquisition, according to a Monday filing reported by Bitcoin Magazine.

October buying continues

The purchase was Strategy’s third bitcoin acquisition of October. It was slightly larger than the company’s previous transaction, when it bought 250 BTC for $22 million. Combined, Strategy has spent $73 million on bitcoin purchases during the month so far.

At current prices cited in the filing, Strategy’s bitcoin holdings are worth about $69.5 billion. The company has spent roughly $64 billion acquiring bitcoin since it began building its digital-asset treasury in August 2020.

Strategy remains the largest corporate holder of bitcoin. Its approach gives shareholders exposure to the cryptocurrency through the company’s stock, without requiring them to purchase and hold bitcoin directly.

Stock performance and preferred shares

Strategy’s shares, listed on Nasdaq under the ticker MSTR, were trading nearly 2% higher on Monday morning in New York at approximately $139. Despite that daily move, the stock had fallen 17% over the previous month and was down 11% year to date.

The filing also disclosed that Strategy repurchased $193.1 million of its STRC preferred stock. The company has been buying back shares this year as STRC preferred stock traded below its $100 face value, amid market volatility and changes to indexes.

Alongside its bitcoin holdings, Strategy has been developing investment products designed to provide yield through its preferred-share series: STRF, STRC, STRK and STRD. Preferred shares are a class of stock that typically has priority over common shares for dividend payments, although the specific terms vary by issue.

Index proposal adds a potential challenge

Strategy’s bitcoin-led corporate model could face an additional issue after Morgan Stanley Capital International said last week that it was proceeding with a proposal to define and classify non-operating companies as ineligible for inclusion in the MSCI Global Investable Market Indexes.

The proposal could eventually result in Strategy being removed from the index. If that happens, fewer institutional investors may hold the company’s stock, according to the reported discussion. The material does not establish whether or when any removal would occur.
