Strategy added 267 Bitcoin to its corporate holdings last week while spending nearly nine times as much buying back its preferred stock, according to Cointelegraph. The company also expanded the authorization for repurchases of its digital credit securities to $3 billion from $2 billion.
Bitcoin purchase lifts holdings to 848,517 BTC
A filing with the US Securities and Exchange Commission said Strategy bought the 267 Bitcoin between Oct. 12 and Oct. 18 for $22.1 million. The average purchase price was $82,900 per Bitcoin, bringing the company’s total holdings to 848,517 BTC.
Strategy financed most of the latest Bitcoin acquisition with $22 million raised through the sale of 140,872 shares of its common stock, which trades under the ticker MSTR. The company used existing cash to fund its preferred-stock repurchases.
Strategy, led by executive chairman Michael Saylor, is described in the report as the largest publicly traded corporate holder of Bitcoin. Its latest purchase continues the company’s established practice of adding the cryptocurrency to its balance sheet, although the week’s spending was weighted more heavily toward share buybacks.
STRC repurchases take priority
Strategy repurchased 1.94 million shares of its Stretch, or STRC, preferred stock for $193.1 million. It also raised its authorization for buying back the securities to $3 billion, up from $2 billion.
The company has spent $459.2 million on STRC repurchases during the fourth quarter so far, compared with $72.3 million used to acquire 851 Bitcoin over the same period. STRC is a variable-rate preferred stock intended to pay regular dividends. Strategy has previously said it plans to repurchase shares trading below their stated value of $100, a move intended to support the stock’s price.
Strategy reported a $4.83 billion USD Reserve for preferred-stock dividend and debt-interest payments. It separately held $447.3 million in USD Cash.
Saylor remains optimistic on Bitcoin
The larger allocation to STRC repurchases comes as Saylor voiced confidence that Bitcoin could be returning to a bull market. Speaking at ParaFi Investor Day on Saturday, he cited Bitcoin’s recovery above its 200-day simple moving average, an indicator commonly used to assess longer-term price trends.
Saylor also pointed to restrictive trade, foreign and monetary policies as risks for Bitcoin. He identified increased bank adoption and the tokenization of traditional financial assets as possible sources of support.
Before Monday’s Nasdaq opening, MSTR was more than 2.5% higher in premarket trading, according to Yahoo Finance. The shares had closed Friday 9.6% lower at $138.83. STRC was about 0.8% higher in premarket trading at $98.45 after falling 1.8% on Friday.
