Strategy and Strive, two major corporate holders of bitcoin, bought a combined 2,772 BTC last week for approximately $237.2 million, reinforcing their commitment to a treasury strategy built around the cryptocurrency despite pressure on related stocks and broader challenges facing the model.
Strategy Adds 1,665 Bitcoin
Strategy, the Nasdaq-listed software company and the largest corporate bitcoin holder, said it purchased 1,665 bitcoin for $142.7 million during the week. The acquisition followed a brief pause and marked its second consecutive weekly purchase.
The company also disclosed that it repurchased $152 million of its preferred stock, known as STRC. Following the bitcoin purchase, Strategy held 847,666 BTC, valued at $70.5 billion, according to a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.
Strategy has also announced plans to pay investors daily dividends on four preferred-stock issues: STRF, STRC, STRK and STRD.
Strive Expands Its Holdings
Strive, described as the fifth-largest bitcoin treasury, reported buying 1,107 BTC for a total cost of $94.5 million last week. The purchase raised its bitcoin holdings to 27,462 coins.
Together, the two companies’ reported purchases amounted to 2,772 bitcoin. Based on the disclosed transaction values, they spent $237.2 million in total. The source reporting, from Bitcoin Magazine, described the two companies as having spent a combined $232.5 million, but the individual figures provided for Strategy and Strive add up to the higher amount.
A corporate bitcoin treasury is a company balance sheet that holds bitcoin as a major reserve asset. The approach has attracted attention because it gives shareholders exposure to bitcoin through publicly traded companies, but it also leaves those companies exposed to sharp movements in the cryptocurrency and their own share prices.
Treasury Strategy Faces Pressure
The purchases come as the wider bitcoin-treasury model has faced setbacks. Major holders including Strategy, Satsuma, Smarter Web Company, Sequans, Nakamoto and Empery Digital have sold bitcoin this year to repay debt, fund operations or finance share buybacks. Other companies have shut down or shifted toward AI infrastructure after their stock prices fell.
Strategy’s MSTR shares have lost more than half their value over the past year, while Strive’s ASST shares have declined by more than 30% over the same period. Both companies have nevertheless maintained that their strategies remain intact.
Strive chief executive Matt Cole has said the company has no debt, no margin requirements and no encumbered bitcoin. Strategy chief executive Phong Le has defended the company’s bitcoin sales this year, describing its balance sheet as “bullet-proof” and the sales as the right trade at the time.
