Switzerland is preparing to launch its first spot Bitcoin exchange-traded fund for retail investors, with BIT Asset Management’s Bitcoin Fund ETF expected to start trading on the SIX Swiss Exchange in November.
The fund, identified as BBIT, will be available for public offering in Switzerland only. According to Cointelegraph, its planned launch follows approval by Switzerland’s financial regulator, FINMA, which announced on Tuesday that it had approved the country’s first ETF investing directly in Bitcoin. The regulator did not initially name the issuer.
Direct Bitcoin exposure through a Swiss fund
BIT Asset Management said on Thursday that BBIT will hold Bitcoin directly rather than gaining exposure through another financial instrument. An ETF is a listed investment vehicle whose shares can be traded on an exchange, allowing investors to obtain exposure to an underlying asset without directly holding it themselves.
The fund will be established as a Swiss collective investment scheme and classified as an “other fund for alternative investments” with particular risk. Its assets will be held separately from those of the management company, a structure BIT Asset Management described as being “ring-fenced” for investors.
The issuer contrasted that arrangement with many Bitcoin products currently listed in Europe. Those products are generally exchange-traded products, or ETPs, which are debt instruments and therefore carry issuer risk, according to BIT Asset Management. BBIT’s structure is intended to distinguish it from those products, although FINMA has stressed that Bitcoin itself remains highly volatile even when accessed through an approved ETF.
Why FINMA approval matters
FINMA has permitted funds investing mainly in a basket of cryptocurrencies since 2021. The BBIT approval marks the first time the regulator has approved a fund investing only in Bitcoin.
FINMA cited Bitcoin’s trading history and its higher trading volume compared with other cryptocurrencies in explaining why it approved a single-asset fund. The regulator also said other fund providers have submitted applications for Bitcoin ETFs, indicating that BBIT may be the first of several such products seeking approval in Switzerland.
The approval does not make the investment low-risk. The fund’s classification specifically places it within an alternative-investment category carrying particular risk, while the regulator’s warning highlights the substantial price volatility associated with Bitcoin.
