TD Cowen says bitcoin is beginning to move beyond its traditional role as an investable asset and could become infrastructure supporting new institutional products and capital-markets activity.
From asset to financial infrastructure
According to Bitcoin Magazine, the investment bank made the assessment in a Tuesday note after attending the BitcoinTreasuries Conference in New York this week. TD Cowen said the discussions it observed focused less on simply buying and holding bitcoin and more on how the cryptocurrency and the ecosystem around it could be used within financial markets.
The bank described bitcoin as increasingly capable of supporting “new capital-markets activity.” In its view, the important development is not only the digital asset itself, but also the services, products and institutional arrangements being built around it.
That distinction matters because an asset is generally held for investment exposure, while financial infrastructure supports the creation, custody, settlement or operation of other products and services. TD Cowen’s view suggests institutions are considering bitcoin as part of a wider market structure rather than only as a standalone holding.
Banks and institutional services
The shift is taking place as large banks examine the technology behind bitcoin and develop crypto-related offerings for customers or internal operations. One area highlighted by TD Cowen is custody, the service through which financial institutions hold and safeguard digital assets on behalf of clients.
TD Cowen said bitcoin custody is becoming more institutional as larger pools of capital enter the ecosystem. BNY Mellon became the first major U.S. bank to offer digital-asset custody services in 2022. Deutsche Bank said this month that it would introduce a bitcoin custody service for European corporate and institutional clients later in 2026.
These developments point to a market in which banks could provide established financial services around bitcoin, making it easier for institutions to participate through regulated or familiar channels. TD Cowen said bitcoin was continuing to develop from a standalone asset into a broader financial ecosystem capable of supporting more sophisticated institutional participation.
Strategy’s role in the discussion
Nasdaq-listed Strategy has for a long time argued that bitcoin could support additional financial products. The company, described in the source report as the largest corporate holder of bitcoin, currently offers preferred stocks that pay investors dividends.
TD Cowen’s comments align with that broader idea: bitcoin may serve as a foundation for products that extend beyond direct ownership of the cryptocurrency. The bank did not limit its assessment to any single product or predict how quickly this development would occur.
