Tesla-linked crypto trading surges after Musk shows flying Roadster prototype

Trading in Hyperliquid’s Tesla-linked perpetual contract jumped from $2.8 million to $47 million in one hour after Elon Musk demonstrated a flying Roadster prototype. The contract rose about 4.9%, highlighting how round-the-clock crypto markets react to company news while U.S. exchanges are closed.

Tesla-linked crypto trading surges after Musk shows flying Roadster prototype

Trading activity in crypto contracts linked to Tesla surged overnight after Elon Musk demonstrated a flying Roadster prototype, giving digital-asset traders a way to respond while U.S. stock markets were closed.

Tesla contract volume jumps

Hyperliquid’s Tesla perpetual contract recorded $47 million in trading volume in one hour, compared with $2.8 million during the preceding hour. That represented an increase of about 1,580%, according to CoinDesk, which first reported the move.

The contract’s price rose approximately 4.9%, reaching about $378. Tesla shares had closed at $362.44 before the demonstration on Oct. 15. The sharp activity made the session the contract’s second-busiest day since it was listed about a year ago, even though the daily trading period was only nine hours old at the time of the report.

Musk presented the prototype after the regular U.S. market had closed. The vehicle uses thruster technology from SpaceX, the space company led by Musk. Tesla shares were later indicated to be about 4.5% higher in premarket trading.

The reaction highlights a feature of crypto-based markets: they remain open around the clock, unlike major U.S. stock exchanges. As a result, traders can take positions linked to the price of a traditional company outside normal equity-market hours.

How the contracts work

Hyperliquid’s product, offered through Trade.xyz, is a perpetual futures contract that follows Tesla’s stock price. It is not a tokenized Tesla share and does not represent ownership in the automaker.

The contract is settled in USDC, a dollar-linked stablecoin, and permits leverage of up to 20 times. It can be traded without opening a conventional brokerage account. Perpetual futures do not have a fixed expiration date, allowing positions to remain open subject to the platform’s rules and the trader’s collateral requirements.

These characteristics help explain why the product was available to traders while Nasdaq was closed. They also distinguish the contract from buying Tesla stock during regular equity-market hours. Leverage can magnify both gains and losses, while the contract’s price tracks the underlying share rather than giving holders the rights attached to actual stock.

Binance leads volume, Hyperliquid has more open interest

Hyperliquid was not the largest venue by 24-hour trading volume. Data from RootData showed $279 million in 24-hour volume for Binance’s Tesla contract, versus $159 million on Hyperliquid.

Hyperliquid did, however, report the greater open interest, at $99 million. Open interest measures the value of outstanding derivatives positions, rather than the total amount traded during a period.

Tesla is also due to publish its third-quarter earnings on Oct. 21. The scheduled report provides another event that could draw attention to Tesla-linked derivatives, although the source material does not indicate how markets will respond.
