Tether Leads $15 Million Series A for AI Payments Startup Mural

Tether has led a $15 million Series A investment in Mural, a New York-based financial infrastructure company developing tools for businesses that need to manage payments and accounts across traditional banking systems and blockchains. The financing lifts Mural’s total funding to $28 million.

According to CoinDesk, the round also included North Island Ventures and Mural’s existing investors. The company was founded by former Palantir engineers and serves fintech companies and other platforms, including payroll provider Deel and browser developer Opera.

Infrastructure for AI-led transactions

Mural provides systems covering several functions that businesses need when moving money through different financial networks. These include account management, payments, identity verification and regulatory compliance.

The company’s technology is designed to connect traditional banking infrastructure with blockchain-based systems. That positioning is relevant as businesses explore “agentic finance,” a model in which artificial-intelligence systems can initiate and complete transactions for individuals or companies rather than merely provide information or recommendations.

AI systems that can move money require controls over what they are permitted to do. Mural’s infrastructure allows businesses to establish transaction limits, block or restrict specific counterparties and require additional approval for larger payments. Those features are intended to address questions about authorization and accountability when software acts with a degree of autonomy.

“As agents start moving money, that connection to the banks, payment networks and compliance systems the world still runs on becomes essential,” Tether Chief Executive Paolo Ardoino said in a statement included with the announcement.

Tether expands beyond stablecoin issuance

The investment is part of Tether’s broader interest in financial technology infrastructure beyond issuing stablecoins. Stablecoins are digital tokens designed to maintain a relatively stable value, often against a national currency such as the US dollar. Tether’s USDT is one such token.

Mural’s funding round connects that stablecoin-focused business with the development of programmable payments, in which payment rules and permissions can be built into software. For Tether, the deal provides exposure to infrastructure that could support financial services using AI-powered systems, while Mural receives capital to develop its platform.

The announcement does not disclose how the $15 million will be allocated or provide a valuation for Mural. It also does not specify any changes to the company’s customer base beyond identifying Deel and Opera as customers.
