Thailand’s new framework for spot cryptocurrency exchange-traded funds has drawn interest from asset managers, but the country’s securities regulator says it has not yet received an application for approval.
Several firms have held consultations with Thailand’s Securities and Exchange Commission about potentially launching locally listed crypto ETFs, according to Cointelegraph. The SEC did not identify the companies involved and said that discussions should not be interpreted as evidence that a fund is ready to launch.
New framework covers Bitcoin and Ether
The rules took effect Friday and allow asset management companies to establish spot Bitcoin (BTC) and Ether (ETH) ETFs listed in Thailand. A spot ETF is an exchange-traded investment product designed to provide exposure to an asset held directly by the fund, rather than through a derivative contract. ETFs are traded on an exchange, allowing investors to buy and sell units during market hours.
Despite the new rules, the SEC said no asset manager had submitted an application to establish a crypto ETF. It also said it was too early to know whether Thailand’s first products would be approved before the end of 2026.
The timing will depend on several factors, including whether prospective applicants are ready, how long the regulatory review takes and whether investor-protection requirements are satisfied. The regulator’s comments leave open the possibility of future launches without confirming a timetable.
Thai investors already have indirect access
The regulatory change builds on existing interest in cryptocurrency investment products in Thailand. Some local asset managers already offer funds that give Thai investors exposure to Bitcoin through investments linked to ETFs listed overseas.
ONE Asset Management became the first Thai asset manager to receive approval for a Bitcoin ETF-linked fund in 2024. MFC Asset Management later introduced a fund that invests through BlackRock’s iShares Bitcoin Trust, known by its ticker IBIT.
Those products provide exposure through overseas-linked funds, while the new framework creates a route for spot Bitcoin and Ether ETFs to be established and listed locally. However, the framework itself does not mean that a fund has been approved or that a launch date has been set.
