President Donald Trump has appointed Jay Clayton, the US director of national intelligence, to lead a newly established Super Intelligence Force, placing the senior intelligence official at the center of the administration’s effort to coordinate federal work on advanced artificial intelligence.
Clayton to oversee new federal AI body
Trump announced the appointment in a post on Truth Social on Sunday. He said the Super Intelligence Force, or SIF, would report directly to him and to White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles.
“The Super Intelligence Force is tasked with coordinating the effort of the Federal Government to ensure that America continues to lead the World in Super Intelligence,” Trump wrote.
The announcement formalizes plans that had been reported earlier. Media reports on Friday said Clayton was expected to take the role, while Cointelegraph previously reported on Sept. 20 that Trump intended to create an “AI Force” modeled on the US Space Force and appoint an artificial intelligence czar.
The SIF’s stated purpose is to coordinate federal efforts around “super intelligence,” a term generally used for highly advanced artificial intelligence systems. The announcement did not provide further details about the force’s structure, budget, timetable or specific programs.
Officials joining Clayton
Trump also named three other senior officials who will work with Clayton:
- Andrew Ferguson, chairman of the Federal Trade Commission.
- Scott Kupor, director of the Office of Personnel Management.
- Emil Michael, under secretary of war for research and engineering and chief technology officer for the Department of War.
Their inclusion brings together officials responsible for competition oversight, federal personnel and government technology, alongside the head of the US intelligence community. The source material did not specify the individual responsibilities each official will hold within the SIF.
The initiative places artificial intelligence within a broad federal coordination framework rather than assigning the role solely to a technology-focused agency. It also links the administration’s AI plans with national intelligence, regulation, staffing and defense research.
Clayton’s existing roles and market picture
Clayton is expected to remain director of national intelligence while leading the SIF, according to sources cited in Friday reports by CNN. He previously led the Securities and Exchange Commission during Trump’s first term and served as interim US attorney for the Southern District of New York. The Senate confirmed him to lead the intelligence community in July.
The appointment therefore adds a new responsibility to an official who already oversees the US intelligence community. The announcement did not say whether Clayton’s duties in that role would change.
