UK Opens Crypto Authorisation Applications Ahead of 2027 FCA Regime

The UK’s Financial Conduct Authority has opened applications for crypto firms seeking authorisation ahead of a new regime scheduled to begin in October 2027. Applicants must meet standards covering consumer protection, customer assets, market integrity and financial resilience.

The UK’s Financial Conduct Authority has begun accepting applications from crypto companies seeking authorisation, marking the first time the country’s digital-asset sector is being brought under full FCA oversight. The new framework is scheduled to take effect in October 2027.

According to Bitcoin Magazine, the regulator said the application process is intended to give the industry greater clarity and legitimacy while firms prepare for the incoming rules. The move comes as Britain develops a broader crypto bill and puts in place the regulatory structure finalized by the FCA in June.

What firms will need to show

Crypto companies applying for authorisation will have to demonstrate that they meet requirements in several areas. These include protecting consumers, safeguarding customer assets, maintaining market integrity and showing sufficient financial resilience.

The FCA’s director of authorisation, Dominic Cashman, said the new regime would provide consumers with greater protections and give firms a defined framework in which to operate. Companies can now submit applications and begin preparing for the regulation before it formally comes into force.

In general terms, regulatory authorisation means that a company must satisfy a regulator’s standards before conducting activities covered by the rules. For crypto businesses, those standards can address how customer assets are held, how markets operate and whether firms have the financial capacity to withstand stress.

Britain’s position in global crypto regulation

The UK’s initiative follows a broader effort to clarify the legal status and regulatory treatment of digital assets. Last year, Britain recognized bitcoin and other digital assets as property. That reform followed a 2023 recommendation from the Law Commission, which said digital assets did not fit neatly within existing legal categories.

The UK is nevertheless moving later than some major jurisdictions. The European Union’s Markets in Crypto-Assets regulation has applied to crypto-asset service providers since December 30, 2024. In the United States, President Donald Trump signed the GENIUS Act into law in July 2025, creating a federal framework for dollar-backed tokens.

The source material also notes that, although lawmakers blocked the landmark Clarity Act last month, US regulators including the Securities and Exchange Commission have continued rulemaking. Against that backdrop, the FCA’s application window represents a significant step toward a formal UK framework, even though the main regime remains more than a year away.
