U.S. spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds recorded another week of withdrawals, extending a sharp reversal in investor flows during October. The funds lost a net $228.6 million in the latest week after investors withdrew $681.1 million the week before, putting combined outflows for the two-week period at roughly $910 million, according to figures reported by Decrypt.
Selling intensifies after inflation data
The funds ended the latest week with $82.4 million in net outflows on Friday. Across the five trading days, withdrawals exceeded deposits on three occasions.
Tuesday briefly offered relief, with $175.7 million entering the products. That gain was more than erased the following day, when investors pulled $261.4 million—the weakest session of the week. A smaller $5.1 million inflow on Thursday was followed by renewed selling on Friday.
The midweek pressure came as economic data raised concerns about interest rates. Consumer prices rose 3.7% year over year in September, above the 3.6% forecast. A stronger-than-expected producer-price reading followed on Thursday, reviving expectations that the Federal Reserve could raise interest rates again.
Bitcoin falls below ETF holders’ estimated cost
Bitcoin briefly dropped below $80,000 on Thursday. CoinGlass data cited in the report showed that nearly $950 million in leveraged crypto positions were liquidated over a 24-hour period, with about 90% of those positions being bullish long trades.
The decline also pushed Bitcoin below the estimated average cost basis of spot Bitcoin ETF holders, which Nexo analyst Iliya Kalchev told Decrypt was near $82,300.
Higher interest rates can make safer, interest-bearing assets such as U.S. Treasuries more attractive relative to riskier investments. They can also raise borrowing costs and strengthen the dollar, conditions that put pressure on leveraged cryptocurrency trading.
October flows remain negative
The latest withdrawals have pushed the funds further into negative territory for the month. After recording approximately $293 million of inflows at the start of October, U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs were down about $615 million for the month, based on Decrypt’s tracker. The deterioration accelerated on October 7, when the products experienced $484.9 million in outflows, their worst single day since June.
Ethereum and Solana ETFs have also recorded net outflows during October, according to the source material.
Spot Bitcoin ETFs hold Bitcoin directly and trade on stock exchanges. They allow investors to obtain exposure to the cryptocurrency through a conventional brokerage account without purchasing or storing Bitcoin themselves. Since their launch in January 2024, the products have attracted $57.3 billion in cumulative net inflows, making their daily flow figures a closely followed measure of institutional and broader investor sentiment.
SoSoValue puts the funds’ total net assets at $104.29 billion, while Decrypt’s tracker gives a $100.2 billion figure. Bitcoin closed Friday near $81,590, compared with about $82,337 a week earlier.
