US Government Transfers $770 Million in Seized Bitcoin to Coinbase Prime

The US government has transferred 9,261 Bitcoin worth about $770 million to Coinbase Prime, moving cryptocurrency linked to earlier law-enforcement seizures and newly identified holdings into the custody platform used for seized digital assets.

According to Cointelegraph, the transfers took place over two days. Galaxy Research said on X that roughly half of the Bitcoin came from assets recovered from the hackers behind the Bitfinex breach. Another portion was connected to seizures associated with Binance.

Newly identified Bitcoin included in transfer

The transaction also included 2,456 BTC that had not previously been identified in the government’s known holdings. Those coins were sent to the US government’s seizure address on Coinbase Prime.

Galaxy Research said the newly observed Bitcoin may represent additional law-enforcement seizures. The available information does not establish which case or cases the coins came from, and the US Marshals Service and the US Department of Justice had been contacted for comment on the transfers.

The movements are visible through on-chain transactions, the publicly recorded transfers made on a blockchain. They show that authorities continue to recover and consolidate cryptocurrency connected to previous exploits and seizures.

Coinbase Prime’s role in seized assets

Coinbase Prime has served as the custody provider used by the US Marshals Service to handle seized digital assets since 2024. In this context, moving Bitcoin to the platform does not by itself confirm that the government has sold the cryptocurrency. Coinbase Prime is an institutional service that can provide custody and transaction handling for large asset holders.

Earlier transfers from wallets identified as belonging to the US government prompted speculation that the Bitcoin could be headed for liquidation. However, such a sale would conflict with President Donald Trump’s executive order issued in March 2025. The order stated that seized Bitcoin should not be sold and should instead become part of the country’s Strategic Bitcoin Reserve.

The government also moved $297 million in Bitcoin and Ether to Coinbase Prime in July. Those assets originated from prominent US government cryptocurrency seizures.
