The week beginning Oct. 12 will bring a closely watched U.S. inflation report, several major crypto-governance deadlines and discussions about Ethereum’s next upgrades. According to CoinDesk, markets are also preparing for bank earnings and regulatory developments that could influence sentiment across digital assets.
Inflation and interest-rate signals
The central macroeconomic event is the release of September U.S. consumer-price data on Oct. 14 at 8:30 a.m. ET. Economists’ estimates call for headline CPI to rise 0.6% month over month, compared with 0.4% previously, and 3.6% year over year, up from 3.4%.
Core CPI, which excludes food and energy prices, is expected to increase 0.2% month over month after a 0.3% rise previously. The annual core rate is forecast at 2.5%, compared with 2.4% in the prior reading.
The figures will be assessed ahead of the Federal Reserve’s October meeting. Current expectations are for the central bank to leave interest rates unchanged, followed by an increase in December. Inflation data can affect expectations for borrowing costs and, in turn, the conditions facing risk-sensitive assets such as cryptocurrencies.
Other U.S. releases will add to the week’s economic picture. Producer-price data is due Oct. 15, with monthly headline PPI estimated at 0.5% and annual PPI at 5.3%. Core PPI is forecast at 0.3% month over month and 4.4% year over year. Retail sales are expected to rise 0.3%, while initial jobless claims are estimated at 195,000 for the period ending Oct. 10.
The schedule also includes China’s September inflation figures, expected on Oct. 13, U.K. August GDP data on Oct. 15 and final September eurozone CPI on Oct. 16. U.S. bond markets will be closed on Oct. 12 for Columbus Day, although equity markets will remain open. Bank earnings will provide another market reference, with BlackRock scheduled to report before the market opens on Oct. 14 and BNY on Oct. 15.
Ethereum and protocol decisions
Ethereum developers are scheduled to hold All Core Devs Consensus call No. 189 on Oct. 15 at 10 a.m. ET. The discussion is set to cover the Glamsterdam and Hegotá upgrades. Developer calls are part of the process used to discuss and coordinate changes to a blockchain’s underlying network.
Several governance votes and protocol deadlines are also on the calendar:
- ArbitrumDAO’s proposed USDG initiative is scheduled to enter an offchain vote on Oct. 15, with voting targeted to continue through Oct. 22.
- Balancer’s vote on an independent, self-funded fork is due to end Oct. 13.
- Compound is voting to withdraw and bridge wETH reserves from its deprecated Ronin market to mainnet, with the vote ending Oct. 13.
- Gitcoin is considering a reduction in its Snapshot quorum from 2.5 million GTC to 1.5 million GTC. That vote is scheduled to end Oct. 15.
Balancer partners also face an Oct. 16 deadline to request extensions for selected v3 pools through Nov. 30 under the protocol’s approved wind-down plan. These events matter because decentralized protocols use governance votes to determine changes to rules, treasury arrangements, network deployments and operating plans.
Regulation, token supply and industry events
Singapore’s Monetary Authority will close its consultation on stablecoin regulation at 11:59 a.m. ET on Oct. 16. A stablecoin is a digital token designed to maintain a relatively stable value, commonly against a reference currency or asset. The consultation’s closing date makes it one of the week’s notable regulatory milestones for the crypto industry.
Token supply events are another potential source of market attention. Starknet’s STRK is scheduled to unlock 3.37% of its circulating supply on Oct. 15, with an estimated value of about $13.2 million. Connex’s CONX is due to unlock 1.39%, worth $12.18 million, on the same day. Arbitrum’s ARB is scheduled to unlock 1.56% of circulating supply, valued at $18.07 million, on Oct. 16. Cronos’ CRO is scheduled to unlock 2.33%, worth $73.08 million, on Oct. 17.
Sonic’s final claim deadline for its Season 1 and Season 2 airdrops is Oct. 15. Industry gatherings during the week include Paradigm Frontiers in San Francisco from Oct. 12 to 14, the Pantera Blockchain Summit in San Francisco on Oct. 15, Ledger Op3n in Paris on Oct. 15, BGIN Block 15 in Washington, D.C., from Oct. 15 to 16, and EDCON in Kuala Lumpur from Oct. 17 to 18.
