VanEck has launched an actively managed exchange-traded fund that combines traditional assets with a small, adjustable allocation to Bitcoin, giving investors exposure to equities, fixed income, gold and other real assets through a single listed vehicle.
A multi-asset fund with a Bitcoin target
According to Cointelegraph, the VanEck Wealth Builder ETF trades on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker WBMO. The fund invests in a mix of VanEck and third-party exchange-traded funds rather than selecting the underlying securities directly.
Its stated target for Bitcoin is 2% of the portfolio. The allocation can range from 1% to 5%, according to VanEck’s website. The fund obtains that exposure through a spot Bitcoin exchange-traded product (ETP), rather than holding Bitcoin directly.
The rest of the strategy is designed to span several broad asset categories. These include global stocks, bonds, gold and other real assets. VanEck manages the allocations and rebalances the portfolio as part of the fund’s active strategy.
An ETF is a listed investment fund whose holdings are packaged into shares that trade on an exchange. A multi-asset ETF can therefore provide exposure to several types of investments in one product, while the fund manager determines how the portfolio is allocated within its stated mandate.
An expansion of VanEck’s wealth strategy
The new ETF builds on VanEck’s Wealth Builder model portfolios. Those portfolios had previously been available to financial advisers through third-party wealth-management platforms. WBMO brings the approach into an exchange-traded fund structure and adds a defined, though limited, Bitcoin allocation.
David Schassler, VanEck’s head of multi-asset solutions, said the traditional 60/40 portfolio—typically associated with a mix of 60% stocks and 40% bonds—was designed for a different investment environment. He said combining real assets with stocks and bonds could help investors address a broader range of economic conditions.
The launch follows VanEck’s partnership in March with retirement platform Basic Capital. That agreement made a selection of VanEck’s digital-asset exchange-traded products available through employer-sponsored 401(k) retirement plans in the United States.
VanEck reported approximately $244.1 billion in assets under management as of September 30, according to the company. The new product places Bitcoin exposure within a broader allocation framework, rather than making the cryptocurrency the fund’s sole or dominant investment.
