XRP’s Circulating Supply Does Not Show How Much Is Available to Buy

XRP’s roughly 63.09 billion circulating tokens indicate the market’s scale but do not show how many are available to buy. Exchange balances include custody holdings, while actual purchase capacity depends on executable sell orders, prices, timing and overlapping ownership records.

XRP’s Circulating Supply Does Not Show How Much Is Available to Buy

XRP’s circulating supply is a measure of the token’s broad market size, not a count of coins currently available for purchase. Data reviewed by CryptoSlate shows why buyers need to distinguish between total circulation, exchange custody and executable sell orders when assessing the market.

Exchange balances are not the same as sellable supply

XRP Insights, a ledger-data tracker, recorded 21.97 billion XRP in exchange-attributed wallets at 08:00 UTC on Oct. 8. The figure covered 699 wallets across 24 venues, but it included more than coins sitting in active order books. Customer assets held in pooled wallets and cold storage were part of the total.

That distinction matters because a coin held by an exchange does not necessarily represent an immediate offer to sell. The quantity that a buyer can actually acquire depends on the prices available and the amount offered at each price level.

An Oct. 8 CoinGecko snapshot illustrated the difference. Its “+2% Depth” measure showed approximately $2.4 million for Binance’s XRP/USDT pair and $4.0 million for Coinbase’s XRP/USD pair. These figures apply only to those individual trading pairs, are reported by the data provider and change as orders are added or removed. They also measure orders within a price range, so any estimate of buyable XRP must specify how much price movement a buyer is willing to accept.

According to CryptoSlate, a meaningful calculation would therefore need a price ceiling, a defined time period and coverage of executable exchange and over-the-counter offers. It would also need to ensure that the same holdings are not counted more than once.

Why the headline supply numbers differ

CoinGecko displayed approximately 63.09 billion XRP as circulating on Oct. 8. XRP Insights used a wider figure of 68.59 billion XRP outside Ripple escrow after accounting for burns, while 31.40 billion XRP remained in escrow. The difference reflects separate definitions rather than a usable range of tokens available for purchase.

Circulating-supply methodologies can exclude escrow and may also leave out unlocked holdings associated with a team or foundation. Subtracting those categories again from a provider’s circulating figure could result in double-counting the exclusions.

XRP Insights’ Oct. 8 breakdown also included 477.4 million XRP linked to wrapped-token reserves and other funds within exchange balances. Of that amount, 140.4 million XRP backing cbXRP, a token backed by XRP, was also listed under decentralized finance. Removing both figures independently would subtract the same backing twice.

The tracker did not include identified US spot ETF custody wallets that lacked public exchange labels in its exchange total. That means exchange-wallet data does not provide a complete picture of every category of custody, either.

Funds, Ripple holdings and dormant balances

Fund disclosures identify another group of XRP held in custody. Bitwise’s XRP fund held about 419.96 million XRP on Oct. 6, while Franklin XRPZ held about 295.83 million on Oct. 5. Together, those snapshots total 715.79 million XRP, but they represent two funds on different dates—not the entire ETF market.

Retail investors cannot redeem individual fund shares directly. Bitwise’s Sept. 28 prospectus allows authorized participants—firms permitted to exchange baskets with the fund—to redeem through delivery of XRP or cash generated from XRP sales. Fund custody can therefore restrict direct access for ordinary investors while retaining a redemption mechanism through the fund structure.

A June 30, 2026, Ripple disclosure reported 37.656 billion XRP held overall, including 32.6 billion in escrow. The implied balance outside escrow was about 5.056 billion XRP on that date. However, treating this historical figure as current sale inventory would go beyond what the disclosure establishes.

Ownership and custody can overlap. Ripple’s Q1 2025 report said some XRP transferred to investment vehicles could remain classified as Ripple-held until the company expected the tokens to enter the broader market. Different labels, therefore, do not necessarily identify different coins.

Other potential deductions are also uncertain. XRP Radar estimated founders’ holdings at 4.60 billion XRP as of Jan. 16, 2026, and listed 531 million XRP as lost or inaccessible as of Jan. 22, 2026. The latter estimate was described as unverifiable and included long-dormant accounts. Neither figure proves that the tokens are currently locked. Protocol escrow is different because it prevents use until specified release conditions are met.

Current XRP market picture

Moneyiar market data recorded XRP at $1.3738486613 at 21:53 on Oct. 8, 2026, with a 24-hour decline of 2.69% and a seven-day decline of 7.84%. The same data showed Ethereum Name Service at $6.21669161, down 3.54% over 24 hours and 9.29% over seven days; Telcoin at $0.0018343146, down 9.6% and 15.11%; and eCash at $0.0000072426, down 5.16% and 10.2% over those periods.

These Moneyiar figures describe quoted market prices and recent performance, not the volume of XRP available at particular prices. For that question, order-book offers remain the more direct measure. Circulating supply establishes scale, while custody data indicates where tokens may sit; only reconciled, executable offers can show what a buyer can obtain within a specified price and time limit.
