Zcash Slides 11% as Leverage Builds After Sharp Rally

Zcash dropped 11% as analysts linked the pullback to heavy leverage built during its rapid rally and concerns about AI threatening crypto encryption. CoinGlass recorded $17.9 million in liquidated Zcash long positions, while later Moneyiar data showed the token trading higher.

Zcash Slides 11% as Leverage Builds After Sharp Rally

Zcash fell sharply over a 24-hour period, with the privacy-focused cryptocurrency dropping 11% and its market capitalization reaching $18.5 billion, according to Decrypt. The move made Zcash one of the day’s biggest cryptocurrency losers, although Moneyiar’s later market data showed the token trading higher at the time of publication.

The decline followed a powerful advance that has made Zcash one of the market’s strongest recent performers. Analysts cited two possible forces behind the sell-off: leveraged trading positions accumulated during the rally and renewed concern that advances in artificial intelligence could eventually threaten the cryptographic systems used by cryptocurrencies.

Leverage magnifies the pullback

Luke Nolan, senior researcher at CoinShares, said the most immediate explanation was the amount of leverage that had built up as Zcash climbed. The token remained 460% above its March low, he noted, meaning that the latest decline came after an unusually large advance rather than in isolation.

In leveraged trading, investors use borrowed exposure to take positions larger than the capital they put up. That can increase gains when prices rise, but it can also force traders to reduce positions or close them when the market moves against them. Those forced transactions can add selling pressure to an already falling asset.

Nolan said Zcash’s rapid rise attracted more attention and encouraged perpetual-futures traders to use leverage. Once prices began to weaken, the resulting position reductions and liquidations amplified the move.

CoinGlass data cited in the report showed that $17.9 million in Zcash long positions were liquidated during the 24 hours under review. A long position benefits from a price increase, so its liquidation indicates that traders betting on further gains were forced out as Zcash declined. The liquidation total was also larger than the $7.3 million recorded for Hyperliquid over the same period.

Nolan argued that the decline should be viewed against the scale of the earlier rally. He described the crypto market as fragile and said that assets with the biggest recent gains can suffer especially large pullbacks when sentiment changes. In his assessment, the proposed French crypto-reporting law was unlikely to have been the main cause of the move.

AI and quantum-encryption concerns

A separate issue has added to the debate around Zcash: whether future advances in artificial intelligence could undermine cryptographic systems before quantum computers become capable of doing so.

The concern gained attention after OpenAI reported major progress in mathematics. Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin and Ethereum Foundation researcher Justin Drake subsequently warned that the crypto industry should prepare for a defensive “bunker mode” if AI begins to challenge encryption more quickly than expected.

Ryan Zurrer, founder and director of investment firm Dialectic, said the lack of widely established cryptographic proofs was contributing to unease. He argued that privacy-focused systems such as Zcash could face particular exposure if the mathematical foundations supporting them were suddenly defeated by an AI-driven attack.

Zcash’s privacy features are designed to allow transactions without publicly revealing certain details, making the security of its underlying cryptography central to the network’s operation. A failure in those cryptographic foundations could therefore have serious consequences for the protocol, although the source material does not say that such an attack has occurred.

Zcash’s effort to upgrade its security

The same security debate has also supported Zcash’s recent appeal. The project has been pursuing changes intended to make the network more resistant to quantum computing and better prepared for advances in AI.

Zakura, a Zcash full-node developer, recently said the team expects the network to be quantum-proof and reasonably AI-proof by January. Tim Sun, a senior researcher at HashKey, said Zcash’s quantum-resistance roadmap had been an important catalyst for its rally, while stressing that implementation remained some distance away.

Sun also said the market’s focus on privacy had continued to grow as traditional financial assets and operations moved onto blockchains. In that view, privacy could become a basic requirement for institutions using blockchain rather than an optional feature.

The privacy debate has also been linked to a proposed law in France. Lawmakers there recently advanced a proposal that would require residents to report crypto holdings of at least €100,000, equivalent to $112,000 in the source material, or face a penalty. The proposal followed backlash connected to crypto-related robberies, kidnappings and “wrench attacks.” It has not passed, and Nolan said it likely had little influence on Zcash’s latest decline.

Moneyiar market picture

Moneyiar market data recorded Zcash at $1,242.6816810853 at 21:29 on October 15, 2026, with a 24-hour gain of 9.32% and a seven-day gain of 5.32%. Those figures differ from the 11% 24-hour fall described in the earlier report, indicating that the market picture had changed by the later timestamp.

Moneyiar also recorded Meteora at $0.3778212794, down 14.15% over seven days but up 0.16% over 24 hours. WINkLink stood at $0.0000552469, down 1.38% over 24 hours and up 1.47% over seven days. All market figures in this section are Moneyiar data at the stated times.
