Bithumb Investigates Possible Data Leak After Internal System Hack

South Korean crypto exchange Bithumb is investigating whether customer information was exposed after hackers breached an internal mobile platform used by employees, according to a report cited by Cointelegraph. The exchange said the employee system is separate from its virtual-asset trading infrastructure, meaning the breach did not provide a route to customer cryptocurrency holdings.

What happened at Bithumb

Bithumb identified the intrusion on Tuesday, after its in-house mobile system was hacked earlier in the week. The platform is used by employees for internal communication, work-related information sharing and other company operations.

The exchange notified both the Korea Internet & Security Agency and the Personal Information Protection Commission on the day it discovered the breach, Yonhap News Agency reported, citing industry sources. Bithumb is now examining the extent of the incident, including whether information connected to its members was included in the compromised data.

“We are analyzing the exact scope, including the possibility of member information being involved,” Bithumb told Yonhap, according to the report. The exchange said it planned to issue an official announcement that morning. Cointelegraph also contacted Bithumb for further comment.

Bithumb’s initial statement distinguished between a possible leak of personal or account-related information and access to digital assets. It said the internal work system is separated from the virtual-asset trading system, and that customer virtual assets could not be accessed through this breach.

Part of a wider cyber-security concern

The incident comes as South Korea’s financial sector faces a series of cyberattacks. During a meeting at the Financial Supervisory Authority headquarters on Wednesday, Governor Lee Chan-jin said 16 South Korean financial companies had been hit by cyberattacks as of Oct. 14.

Other companies named in recent reports include asset manager Mirae Asset Global Investments and Daishin Securities. Daishin Securities said personal and credit information belonging to 38,490 customers had been leaked.

Mirae Asset Global Investments said it had blocked abnormal external access to some of its web systems and was investigating. The company said investor information was not affected, according to Yonhap.

For Bithumb, the investigation will determine whether the incident was limited to an employee-facing system or also involved member information. The exchange’s separation of internal systems from its trading infrastructure is central to its statement that customer crypto holdings were not exposed through the attack.
