Coinbase has completed its integration with Deribit, creating a regulated route for eligible US customers to access the global crypto derivatives market through Coinbase’s US derivatives operations.
A new route into global derivatives
The integration brings Deribit’s options and perpetual futures liquidity into Coinbase’s platform for qualifying customers. Coinbase Financial Markets, the company’s derivatives unit regulated by the US Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), will provide the connection for eligible US clients.
Coinbase said its international exchange balances and positions were migrated to Deribit on October 1. The company described the arrangement as a combination of its international derivatives business with Deribit, a move that gives US customers access to markets that have traditionally been difficult to reach through regulated US channels.
According to Cointelegraph, the development is particularly relevant to institutions. US institutional clients will be able to use Coinbase Prime and Coinbase Financial Markets to access Deribit’s options and perpetual futures. In the past, institutions seeking similar exposure commonly relied on offshore entities and separate trading systems.
Why the integration matters
Derivatives are contracts whose value is linked to an underlying asset. Options give traders the right, but not the obligation, to buy or sell at an agreed price, while perpetual futures are contracts designed to track an asset’s price without a fixed expiry date.
Coinbase estimates that crypto derivatives represent about 80% of total global crypto trading volume. Despite that scale, US traders have historically had limited access to the deeper options and perpetual futures markets available offshore.
That situation began to shift in May, when the CFTC issued guidance allowing Coinbase Financial Markets to connect US customers with global derivatives markets. The latest integration builds on that regulatory development, while access remains limited to customers who meet the relevant eligibility requirements.
Coinbase also said options through Coinbase Prime are expected to launch in the coming weeks. Options for eligible non-US retail customers are planned over the same period, with access for US retail customers expected later this year.
