Discord will begin making messages from eligible public servers searchable on the web, expanding their reach beyond members. Users and administrators can opt out, while cryptocurrency, trading and finance communities may be especially affected.

Discord to Make Public Server Conversations Searchable on Google

Discord is preparing to make parts of conversations from its largest public communities discoverable through search engines, a policy change that could significantly expand the audience for posts previously seen mainly by members of the platform.

The change will apply to “Discoverable Servers”: public communities listed in Discord’s directory that have at least 1,000 members and do not require an invitation to join. Starting Nov. 16, each eligible server will receive a web page that may contain summaries of discussions in public channels. From mid-December, individual messages from qualifying channels may also appear in web search results, including on Google.

Discord said the change is intended to make useful information easier to find. According to Cointelegraph, the company argued that online communities have increasingly moved away from traditional message boards and into Discord servers, leaving potentially valuable answers difficult for people outside those communities to locate.

The company will not apply the change retrospectively to older posts. Messages published before the rollout will not be included. Discord also said usernames and avatars will not be displayed alongside messages that are published on the open web.

Why the policy is drawing attention

Although the affected servers are public, users have raised concerns about the difference between being visible inside Discord and being indexed by an internet search engine. A post written for members of a particular community could now be encountered by people who never joined the server or understood its original context.

The response has been mixed. Some users have criticized the move because it could expose conversations to a much broader audience than participants expected. Others have welcomed it, saying that Discord’s role as a replacement for forums has made technical answers, support discussions and community knowledge harder to find through ordinary web searches.

The policy may be particularly relevant to cryptocurrency communities. Discord is widely used by digital-asset projects and related groups for technical discussions, user support and announcements. Cointelegraph identified nearly 800 servers tagged “cryptocurrency,” about 1,400 tagged “trading” and more than 700 tagged “finance” in Discord’s public directory. Discord said its platform has more than 63,000 discoverable servers in total.

The rollout concerns public channel content, not private or invitation-only communities as described in Discord’s policy. However, the settings available to users and server administrators will determine whether eligible posts are displayed on public web pages and in search results.

How users and administrators can opt out

Individual users can disable the feature before the mid-December message-sharing rollout. Discord’s instructions direct users to User Settings, then Data & Privacy, where they can switch off “Show my message content from Discoverable channels on web pages.” The setting applies across every Discoverable Server that the user belongs to.

The feature will be disabled by default for users in Australia, the European Union, the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom, Canada, Brazil and South Korea. Teen users will also be excluded, according to Discord.

Users can change the setting after the feature launches, but opting out later will protect only messages posted after the change. To remove an eligible message that has already been made available, Discord says the user must delete the message from the platform. Search engines may continue to show cached copies for a period of time, meaning deletion may not result in immediate removal from every search result.

Server administrators have a separate set of controls. Through Server Settings and Web Presence, they can prevent messages from specific channels—or from an entire server—from appearing on public web pages and in search results. Administrators can also turn off discussion summaries, which Discord plans to begin rolling out in November.
