Petrobras develops Cardano tools to track SAF and renewable diesel claims

Petrobras has developed two Cardano-based applications to track sustainability claims for sustainable aviation fuel and renewable diesel. One tokenizes SAF environmental attributes, while the other records Diesel R across production, transport and use for potential Scope 3 reporting.

Petrobras develops Cardano tools to track SAF and renewable diesel claims

Brazilian state-controlled energy company Petrobras has developed two applications on the Cardano blockchain to record sustainability data connected with sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and its Diesel R renewable diesel, according to reporting by Cointelegraph.

The projects are part of a research and development partnership involving Petrobras, the Cardano Foundation and PUC-Rio’s Ledger Labs. The collaboration began in 2023 with blockchain education for Petrobras employees and expanded in 2025 to energy-sector research with the university laboratory.

The applications are intended to make environmental claims easier to trace and help prevent the same benefit from being counted more than once. However, the Cardano Foundation has not disclosed how much fuel the systems currently cover or when they might be deployed more broadly.

Digital claims for sustainable aviation fuel

One application focuses on the environmental attributes associated with SAF. Developed with PUC-Rio’s Ledger Labs, it converts those attributes into digital tokens called CS-SAF.

The system follows a Book-and-Claim model. Under this approach, the environmental benefit does not have to remain attached to the physical fuel. Instead, it can be assigned to an airline, company or passenger even when the SAF itself is used at another location.

The CS-SAF tokens include metadata aligned with the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation, or CORSIA. The system is also designed to reduce the risk of double counting, in which one environmental claim is used more than once.

Passengers can claim CS-SAF tokens through an application and receive a certificate connected with their journey and the related environmental claim. The announcement did not provide details on the number of passengers or fuel transactions involved.

Tracking Petrobras’ renewable diesel

The second Cardano-based application creates digital checkpoints across the life cycle of Diesel R, Petrobras’ renewable diesel fuel. These records cover production, transportation and use.

The data could help companies prepare Scope 3 reporting. Scope 3 refers to indirect emissions generated across an organisation’s value chain, rather than emissions directly produced by its own operations. Tracking information at multiple stages can provide a record for reporting on those wider activities.

The initiative places Petrobras among energy companies examining blockchain as a way to document sustainability information. Shell has used a similar Book-and-Claim approach through Avelia, a blockchain-based platform launched in 2022. Shell said in a September update that Avelia had supported more than 84 million gallons of SAF entering the global fuel network since launch, associated with more than 780,000 tonnes of carbon-dioxide-equivalent abatement through June 2026.

In January, Australia’s Viva Energy also agreed with NoviqTech to research digital Book-and-Claim systems for SAF, including blockchain applications for emissions reporting and environmental-claim tracking.

Cardano market picture

Moneyiar market data at 09:14 on October 1, 2026, showed Cardano’s ADA at $0.2471319823, up 0.49% over 24 hours and 4.06% over seven days. The data does not indicate that the Petrobras announcement caused these price movements.
