Publicly traded companies generated 16% of blockchain industry revenue in 2026, more than twice their 7% share in 2022, according to a new report from crypto investment firm 1kx cited by Cointelegraph. The increase came even as total blockchain revenue is projected to fall 28% year over year to about $100 billion.
1kx based its findings on data from more than 2,600 protocols and earnings reports from 104 public companies through the third quarter. The researchers linked the rising contribution from listed businesses to new stock-market listings and stronger revenue at companies already operating in the sector.
Coinbase, Circle lead listed-company revenue
Circle, a stablecoin issuer, became a public company in 2025, adding to the listed-company group examined in the report. The 10 largest public companies in the study have doubled their blockchain-related revenue over the past three years.
Coinbase and Circle together produced about $3.3 billion in blockchain-related revenue during the first half of 2026, according to 1kx. Publicly traded Bitcoin miners generated approximately $2 billion, while traditional financial companies including JPMorgan, BlackRock, CME Group, Visa and Robinhood contributed a combined $1.1 billion.
The revenue remains concentrated. The six largest publicly traded companies accounted for an estimated 50% to 60% of revenue generated by the public-company group.
Tokenization and payments gain ground
The report identified a broader shift in where blockchain revenue is being generated. In the third quarter, revenue linked to wider economic activity exceeded revenue from blockchain infrastructure for the first time, reaching roughly $5.3 billion versus $5.1 billion.
The broader category includes tokenized assets, payments and prediction markets. It grew 58% year over year in the first half of 2026. Institutional adoption and this wider economic activity together represented 33% of total blockchain revenue in the third quarter, with 1kx projecting a 30% share for the full year.
Tokenized real-world assets also expanded during the period. RWA.xyz data cited in the report put the value of distributed tokenized real-world assets at $39.54 billion, up from $26.16 billion in October 2025. Tokenized equities rose 471% over the same period to $3.77 billion.
