Robinhood is expanding its relationship with Ripple through a combination of stablecoin payments, treasury-management software and institutional trading services.
Ripple’s RLUSD stablecoin went live on Tuesday on Robinhood Chain and the Bitstamp cryptocurrency exchange. The token is expected to become available through Robinhood’s main trading app later this year, according to reporting by Decrypt.
The arrangement gives Robinhood access to several parts of Ripple’s business rather than involving only a new crypto listing. Robinhood will use Ripple Treasury to manage its global cash operations, while RLUSD will be used on the XRP Ledger to settle institutional transactions conducted through Bitstamp.
RLUSD expands beyond a crypto listing
RLUSD is a stablecoin, a digital token intended to maintain a value of one U.S. dollar. Stablecoins are designed to allow value to move on a blockchain while reducing exposure to the price swings associated with cryptocurrencies such as XRP or Bitcoin. They can also enable transfers outside traditional banking hours, although the transaction still depends on the relevant blockchain and platform infrastructure.
Ripple launched RLUSD in December 2024. The company says the stablecoin’s market capitalization, which represents the value of all tokens in circulation, has now exceeded $2.5 billion.
The token’s initial availability in this arrangement covers Robinhood Chain and Bitstamp. Its planned arrival on Robinhood’s primary app would make it available to the trading platform’s 28.6 million funded customers, although the source material does not specify the exact timing or the conditions for that rollout.
Robinhood will use RLUSD on the XRP Ledger for institutional settlement across Bitstamp’s institutional business. Settlement is the stage at which a trade is completed and the assets and payment are delivered. The focus on institutional transactions distinguishes the initiative from a standard retail crypto-listing announcement.
Ripple software and trading services
Robinhood is also adopting Ripple Treasury for its worldwide treasury operations. Treasury software is used to oversee a company’s cash, including payments, cash-flow forecasts and risk management. Ripple said the arrangement also covers intercompany netting, a process that offsets amounts owed between different parts of the same company so that fewer separate payments are required.
The third part of the relationship involves Ripple Prime, Ripple’s prime-brokerage business. Prime brokers provide services such as financing, lending and trade clearing to large market participants, including hedge funds and other institutions.
Ripple Prime already supplies Bitstamp with lending and margin financing across approximately 20 digital assets. Margin financing allows traders to borrow money to increase the size of a position. Ripple Prime customers also have access to spot trading on Bitstamp, where assets are bought or sold at current market prices.
Later this year, Ripple Prime is expected to add perpetual futures trading on Bitstamp. Perpetual futures are contracts that track the future price of an asset but do not have a fixed expiration date. The source material does not provide a launch date or additional details about the planned product.
Robinhood, Bitstamp and the wider business context
Robinhood completed its purchase of Bitstamp in June 2025 for about $200 million. Bitstamp is described as one of the world’s longest-running crypto exchanges, and institutions account for most of its trading volume. The exchange therefore provides a channel for Ripple’s institutional settlement and financing services within a business now owned by Robinhood.
Ripple paid $1.25 billion for the prime-brokerage firm in a deal announced in April 2025, when the business was still known as Hidden Road. The transaction brought lending and clearing capabilities into Ripple’s offering, alongside its blockchain and stablecoin products.
The relationship also comes as Robinhood’s cryptocurrency business has been undergoing changes. The company reduced its crypto listings during the Securities and Exchange Commission’s crackdown involving Ripple and other crypto companies, before adding XRP for U.S. customers in November 2024.
Robinhood cut about 10% of its staff in June. Its crypto transaction revenue fell 34% year over year in the first quarter to $134 million. The company is scheduled to report third-quarter results after the market closes on Tuesday. Those results will be the first to cover a full quarter since Robinhood Chain launched on July 1.
